Mikeey's FTO to teach the kids to drive a car

I could have called it something else I guess.
Okay so to bring you up too speed….
I bought this FTO at a price that most would pay an annual insurance premium for. It really was that cheap.
I need to teach my two sons to drive, our insurance company (dam aussie owned) wanted to steel massive amounts more of me beer drinking money grrrrrr that's if we wanted the two boys covered on the insurance doco for the wifes Toyota Yaris/Vitz. I wasn’t having any of that!
The car had to be cheap, a manual and be covered by third party insurance.
One 1996 FTO 5 speed manual with 161,000ks later, done!
Now I’ve got standards and if I don’t trust something, car or motorbike I pull it to bits to make sure all is good. This being said unless it’s new of course, even then I give it a quick look over.
This is going to be one of those, as I go over things on the car. There’s a whole heap of shite on this thing that is so wrong in my books, it’ll be 16 years old in September. I'd say it has done 160,000 hard k’s, has certainly been neglected when it comes to maintenance and it's been well used and abused.
I can’t complain too much as the price was right, which basicly means I’ve got a lot of room to move before I even come close to the value these go for here in NZ.
If your interested then read on, spelling, punctuation and grammar ain’t one of me strong points, so you typo Nazis can f**k off.

- Engine oil (black)
Put in a can of engine flush. I’ve always been very reluctant to use this stuff but in this engine, it really did need it.
I followed the instructions on bottle to the letter. Replaced oil and filter and less than fifty kilometers later I replaced the oil and filter again. It’s running clear now.
- Gear box oil (very black)
When I replaced this I only got about 1.5 litres out of it, I’ve never seen a gear box with black oil and in such bad condition as this before.
- Over heating on the open road. (fixed)
No coolant, just rusty water in the cooling system.
In a nut shell flushed and flushed, replaced the temp sensor and flushed again. Thanks to the help of those on this forum, you can read the entire post here.....

Cleaning.
Only one panel left to do under the bonnet, Washed, scrubbed (with a tooth brush) and polished it.
The boot got the same
Beer time!

Push clutch in noise goes away, release clutch noise comes back.
Turns out it’s the primary shaft bearing in the gear box, I thought it was a clutch issue. Thanks Bennoz for putting me right.
The gear box removal & tear down has started.
After work today and a quick hour later…. (hey it's well past beer o’clock)
Both sides are at this stage.
Up on stands, wheels off and safety measures in place.
Air intake, air box & flow sensor removed. Battery etc.
Gear box oil drained, brake disc and caliper off

Looks good so far, white is definitely the best color for an FTO.
You didn't mention what engine is in it?

You cracked the box yet? Make sure you do the big ass spring clip that's hidden under the seal on the outside end of the box first!
