Idling at 4k revs?

A few weeks ago I replaced my sparkplugs in the fto. Then discovered that the rear bank leads were no good so I ordered them online.

Anyways after a few weeks wait i've finally got the leads and got them into the fto today. Got all the manifold back on correctly etc etc.

However now when I start the fto, the car doesn't idle at the correct revs it jumps straight to 4,000rpm as it's idle. Sometimes it drops down to 3,000rpm and rapidly jumps up or down a few hundred rpm.

Have been through it with Tim over txts and checked everything we can think of. Have checked the throttle body, cable and everything attached to it. Thinking stepper motor or throttle position sensor?

Any suggestions, recommendations?

I'm guessing you disconnected the battery?
It could just be the car re-learning the idle?

Thats what I thought, but would it really be at 4k? I doubt it would be the stepper, as I assume you wouldnt have touched it, kiz. Tech might be right though.

But pfft, who cares.. only 1.5k revs away from MIVEC! :twisted:

I know you have checked everything but it sounds like a vacuum hose to me, the one that goes from the throttle body to the brake booster.

You mean intake manifold to brake booster....

Give you a hint? When you removed the inlet manifold you removed the 2 bolts where the throttle cable attaches to? Bet you have it to tight after putting everything back together. Loosen the two bolts and move the adjustment bracket 5-10mm to the right and re-tighten.

Guarantee it's this ^^^

Over tightened your throttle cable.

Didn't you do that on our first tappet adjust Vectose? But we noticed that the cable was too tight to the throttle body before we started the engine.
You will see the bolt marks on the bracket to where it should line up.

I'm smarter than that mate, that was one of the first thing I checked. However even with the throttle cable loose as a phillipino hooker it doesn't make any differance.

Yea the battery has been disconnected fom a few weeks waiting on the leads. So i'm guessing it's the ecu learning to idle, but still 4k revs is a bit excessive and i'm not even going to think about driving it at this higher revs, because i'm not interested in doing a new clutch just yet...

Is the buttefly on the throttle body fully closed? Maybe something has jammed it.

Regardless somewhere you are getting air into the intake plenum where it shouldn't be. Get a smoky stick and run it over until you see where the air is sucking in.

Cheers mate, I had concerns with the butterfly possibly being stuck shut but it does open and close when i move the throttle cable. Will check into the air coming in from elsewhere as well though. Might take the intake manifold off and start from scratch checking everything

The butterfly should be completely closed when idling/off throttle. You should not be able to see any gaps through.

My memory is spot on :D
It was on the third remove/replace of your intake that night when we were tracking that noisey tappet on my first visit to your place. It was late and we were tired, we picked it up instantly. It's all good, no biggy buddy.
Do you remember the vacuum hose Vectose? ;)
I just mentioned it to maybe help kiz with his issue.
But I agree with Shane, thats why I mentioned the vacuum hose first. Thinking it could have come away from the brake booster end of the hose.

I remember the vacuum hose but we never over tightened the throttle cable. I remember we didn't screw in one of the bolts all the way. But the other one was tight.

So i'm out with the fto, removed the intake manifold and started from scratch with it removed then put it back together. Now correct me if i'm wrong but there are 2 vacuum hoses on the intake manifold, one at the back and one near the throttle? little hoses? If so then they are both on and this hasn't solved the problem.

The butterfly valve is as meant to be and moves freely when I move it.

When the car is started this time it is at 3k revs but then slowly increases, then it starts jumping after a few seconds between revs. I can try to get a video if that helps?

There's two hoses attached to the rear of the manifold one larger one that's connected to the brake booster and one smaller one that's connected to the MAP sensor on the firewall.
