Hey Guys, New Here!

Hey guys,

New here, looking to buy an FTO as my first car!
Only issue seems to be insurance at the moment, which is ridiculous for an 18 year old on P Plates, or even under 25 for that matter. I was however, wondering - can I put the car under my mum's name entirely and not be listed on the policy at all? It's seems the only option for this to be affordable..

But nonetheless, excited to own an FTO, can't wait to buy one and mod it up!

Hi and welcome to the forum.
You'd need to get your mom to call. Make sure you're still covered though even if she is the primary policy holder.
Also maybe the car will need to be in her name.

The problem is, if you weren't on the policy at all, and you're the one driving the car when/if its in a crash, you won't be covered.
Meaning, I don't even think you or your mum could make a claim.

Welcome to the club!

Only company I know that covers unlisted drivers is NRMA but the excess for unlisted drivers under the age of 25 is like $1600 on top of the standard excess.

You should be able to put it in your mums name with you as a nominated driver if she is prepared to do that. Obviously any claim will effect her policy premiums

AAMI allow for unlisted drivers.

However, don't go with AAMI.

AAMI don't insure imports.

The insurance thread is the one to search for. That will tell you the best ones to go to.

Try telling them that

"How many cars do you have sir?"
"3 that are registered"
"Would you like quotes for all 3 vehicles, we can offer a discount"
"No thanks, I'll be cancelling my policy soon"

Meanwhile, in that conversation I listed all cars and they never mentioned anything about the FTO being un-insurable.
I know Just Car is a division of the Suncorp Group, which encompass AAMI, but yeah. No idea.

Just Car don't have any written information regarding unlisted drivers, I have contacted them about it and they told me that their policy's are based on the youngest driver and that if an unlisted driver is driving the vehicle that they will handle it on a case by case basis.

Im with NRMA. Paying around $1200 a year, I am unlisted, 17 year old on red Ps and the car is both registered and insured under mum's name. She has like 60% no claim (or whatever the highest is?) and a good driving record (never caused an accident, touch wood). Personally I think NRMA is the way to go, as I am unlisted and pay nothing extra unless (god forbid) I cause an accident, however if I did, the car is still covered and so is the bloke I hit. Causing an accident means that premiums will go up as mentioned earlier.

tl;dr - NRMA.

Yep, second NRMA

1300 a year for a 19yr old red p plater when i got it, i opted to pay i think 100 more excess to get it down like 200 a year, you can choose more excess for less premium or the other way, they do list an FTO, and at that stage i had already lost my licence twice, so not a clean driving history.

Everywhere else was at least double that, and i have never had a customer service problem etc. Although i have never been through an insurance claim so i dont know what their like there..
