5spd Tip GPvR Issues.

Hello all,
This saga has been ongoing for over a year now. It started last summer with what I thought was an apparent overheating gearbox. It only happened on 30+ degree days.
Old thread here: http://ftoaustralia.com/v3/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=24666
I flushed the fluid from the gearbox and torque converter and there was no improvement, it still had the same problem.
Now explaining the problem;
The car starts well, and drives well. Maybe after an hour or so during a long drive the car will not respond normally to acceleration. The car struggles to get revs. I watched the rev meter and it can't exceed 1600rpm without dropping. The engine temp doesn't go above normal levels, and it is functioning correctly as I had it go up once due to a loose radiator hose.

When it's in neutral it does the same thing, struggles to rev. That's why I'm going to assume the gearbox itself is not the issue here as it drives well 95% of the year and has never seen limp mode once. In order to get the car drivable again, I need to pull over and turn it off and leave it to cool down for a good 20 mins.
The fuel filter has been changed, the spark plugs and leads were changed before I got the car (20,000km ago), the gearbox has been flushed and there was no metal shavings that I could see (and i looked). The filters for both the transmisison and engine oil have been changed (oil every 5000km).
Now this is the bad part, it did it yesterday and it was a chilly 17 degrees in Melbourne.
There is a high pitched whine coming from the exhaust.

I've been researching and I have some theories;
A) I have a slightly rough idle, the car cycles through the cylinders but the idle dips at the same spot. The car blows a slight amount of oil out the exhaust only when I put my foot down in 5th and it goes to 3rd and rev really hard. No other time. There's also a decent amount of black soot on the exhaust tip. Could it be that there's a leaking piston ring or value seal, thus causing build up on the catayltic converter and making the whine due to a blockage?
B) A vacuum leak somewhere that seems to worsen when the car's running hot. Something is heating up and expanding. This is an iffy one as if it was then I'd be in trouble almost everytime I drove. I will test later this week for leaks and update this one.
C) Electrical fault. Something is failing at high temp and not functioning correctly. I did a error code check and didn't get anything helpful. The fuel pump is not noisy, but possibly the input and output sensors on the gearbox could be failing (no error code came up). I don't have spares to check.
I will be getting a compression test later this week to (hopefully) eliminate the engine itself. I'll check for vacuum leaks and exhaust leaks as well.
Any ideas you want to throw in the mix would be appreciated.
Thanks!
