Starting issues

When ever I leave my car for a long period unstarted say over 24 hours, it cranks and runs but mostly splutters and coughs and then either gets going normally or stops. Upon restart it goes like nothing is wrong.

Any ideas what's causing this.

IDLE speed control motor perhaps, maybe its stuffed like how mine was...
do u have like fluctuating revs at the lights?
on cold start, my car used to start then stall straight away... sometimes splutter at 250rpm then kind of rise to only about 800 where it should be about 1500rpm when it's cold...

it might be the same problem as what i had..

good test for a faulty stepper is to see if:
Do revs drop when AC is turned on? Faulty Stepper
Do your revs increase more than it usually should when put into park or nutural? Faulty Stepper.

Warmup RPM I find is around the 2k rpm mark so that isn't out of the ordinary.

Should progressively drop over time.

hmmm sounds like it could be the stepper motor. its a common problem. sometimes the stepper motor could be dirty and just needs a clean as it is often neglected. check this article out.

it is really helpful

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jaycom/fto ... tepper.htm

:P

or it could be the throttle body could be dirty and needs a clean. to clean jus remove the inlet piping and use carburuettor(spelling) clean.

good luck

*smiles* reporting back on idle stuff.

Immedimately from start, it jumps to 2k then settles at 1.5k, then slowly drops as engine heats up =)

yeah once the car is warm it should drop to around 750... (sometimes this looks like 500)....

dirty plugs
dirty fuel filter
dirty ISC

all these can lead to cars stalling...

has you car had a major service??? how long since its last service??? if you haven't had a major service yet it's seriously time to...i know they can be expensive (especially when done properly) but the cost is a hell of a lot cheaper than a new motor!

It said that you can clean the stepper motor with WD40..... my question is...do you clean the black tip only? won't it destroy it?

well i just cleaned my stepper motor today with it, but i havnt tested my car to see if the idling problems have stopped. Im not a mechanic and like you im just learning :P so if your not confident or worried then let the mechanics do it, but im pretty sure they will charge through the nose. btw i think they use DW40 cus its easier to remove the crap that make the stepper motor dirty...

a stepper motor problem is damn easy to diagnose. If your car stall when first started up in the morning, ifts stuffed, simple.

Idle seems to be low, very high idle when in P and N, eg 1200 rpm, when turning on the AC, idle drops, the stepper is at fault.

it is also easy to replace by urself..

goto www.nardek.com.au

remove the inlet pipe..

then unscrew the the 2 bolts or whatever.

remove the ecu cable thing.

put in the new one

reset ecu

then wholla i think it should run beautifully again... hehehe
