Mivec Problem?

I've asked a few people and haven't really been getting anywhere so here's the situation.
Every now and then when I get to 5500 and Mivec kicks in, you hear it open up like usual and what not. Only problem is when I come back down under 5500, more so when I roll up to the next stop/lights. It sounds like it's still on with the exhaust gurgling and my idle diving. It comes very close to stalling (I flick it into N and give it a little throttle to keep it alive) but never does.
I got no idea whats going. Something new is breaking on it every week now lol
Might just trade it in a get a Version R.

Most common thing would be the stepper motor for the stalling problem.
Also check oil level and condition, it may need a service or topup.

100,000 km engine was swapped into about 1500km ago. Oil levels seemed fine when I checked them two days ago.
Vectose mentioned something about a Mivec Solenoid?

Search stepper motor... It sounds like your stalling problem is that..
A very common problem with lots of people posting exactly what the car was doing. See if your symptoms are the same.

If the top of the engine is all glugged up with sludge, it's possible may not be releasing properly, unlikely though, but this is very easy to test, download the manuals for full instructions. It's more likely not to engage than not to disengage though.
More likley something like stepper motor as has been suggested.

So I'm not going for the hat trick in the help section, I'll post today's new problem here.
My gearboxes gear changes have been become ever more violent. Just commuting to work today when it changed down to 3rd I pretty much smashed my face into the horn almost
Probably something else I'm going to have to spend and replace.
So what am I looking at hear. New box/rebuild?
Or is it something small and easily fixable.
Best guesses anyone?
4spd Tip fyi

When was the last time you changed the gearbox oil?

Mechanic supposedly done it when the new engine was swapped in to it. (2000km's ago?)
I don't thrash it or anything but I guess it's getting on in age.
