Does anyone know if there is an easy way to disable the "keys in ignition when door open" BEEP
while you are trying to work on the car as it is really pissing me off now :x

Turn the key to the "ON" position.

There is a simple way to fix it, just take out the keys :D .

It is hard to check electrical circuits when they are off because the keys are out of the ignition

If you really wanna disable it then you gotta take out the buzzer, it is a box on the back of the fuse box and is a pain to get to in the car.

Or just put a bit of tape on the door switch.

thanks vectose but do electronic ignition systems still have the same problems with the coils heating up when left on and not discharged.

I know on older cars you could easily burn out the coil.

That is only a concern with older cars that have distributors. It is not a problem with electronic ignition systems.

I may as well try & add all this info into this post. All this stuff I've dredged up from places like the Waybackmachine & ftooc... even some old stuff from here

This was to disable the beep in reverse, but it's the same board that has the keys in ignition beep
The original & now defunct funky_fto site wrote:You will need
* Soldering Iron or wire clippers.
* 10mm spanner or socket.

Fed up of your car sounding like a van when you select reverse? Well this is an easier fix than you think.

You need to get a circuit board out from your car - dont worry, this isnt scarey stuff. You need to go underneath the steering wheel on the right of the footwell. Here you will find a mass of wires and electronics, and the fuse box for the interior of the car. Attached behind this fuse box is the circuit board you need.

To get at it you need to unclip top and bottom and remove the entire box as one by pushing it towards the engine. The box itself is simply a black plastic box about the size of a box of Swan matches. It disconnects itself from the fuse box as you push it away from you. You may want to remove the bolt just below the fuse box to make it easier to get your fingers around the black box.

Once it's removed, you can dis-entangle yourself from under the steering wheel. Open the box carefully and the circuit board will fall out. This board contains the 'beeper' and some circuits to control it. Look over the board for a diode labeled "D3". See pic below:

You need to disconnect this diode. To do this, either carefully use the wire cutters to cut it, or use a soldering iron to heat the rear of the board where the diode is at one side and pull one leg of the diode away from the board. Be careful! This is the most tricky bit!

Once this is completed, re-fit the board into the black box, and then re-connect this to the back of the fuse box. Remember to re-fit the bolt below the fuse box if you removed it earlier. The job is now done.
Advice I got from Patt on ftooc when I first asked the question back in 2005:
Patt wrote:If you look at the picture the three diodes control the reverse bleep, keys in ignition bleep and lights on bleep.
It was years ago that I did this mod , but IIRC it's diode 2 for the keys in bleep that needs snipping.
Easiest was is to have some solder and a soldering iron to hand and just test until you get the right one - that's how I got the reverse bleep to go

Finally, a thread about it here from a few years back:

Thanks for your help bennoz looks simple enough
most cars that have a keys in beep with door open have a quick disconnect near the drivers door just under the dash
so that when you are working on the car it doesnt annoy the sh*t out of you.

Bennoz, what else is that circuit board in charge of?
My car beeps all the time if the door is open even if the keys are not in the ignition, but does not beep if I leave the lights on. I assume something is missing in the key barrel as the Lancer never had this "key in beep" feature

It does the reverse beep, keys in ignition beep, lights left on beep & there's one other I can't remember off the top of my head...

I've never had the reverse someone may have already done this to my fto lol but I do have the keys in ignition and light on
I would think the other one would have something to do with the boot wouldn't it

Bennoz, any idea what might be wrong/missing since mine only beeps when the door is open and car is off?
No beeps for headlights or anything else.

ZFL45H1, the reverse beep is only for automatics

Unsure mate, this is your Lancer yeah? What sort of wiring did you do with the engine conversion? Cause that board we're talking about is on the car loom, not the engine loom.
