Wheel bearings

Before I part with the cash to replace my rear wheel bearings is there anyway of being 100% sure they do need replacing? I have a whine in the back left corner that sounds like a shot diff or gearbox so I'm guessing it's the bearings but at $144 a side I want to be sure. There doesn't appear to be any movement if I jack the car up and move the wheel. Thoughts?

Pull the wheel off & spin the hub by hand. Flick it around quickly a few times, you'll hear it if it's gone.

Alternatively, leave the wheel on and pull it side-to-side and up-and-down. If there's excessive movement around the wheel (i.e. it's noticeably moving) then chances are the bearing is cactus.
