Smurfy is overheating in traffic. Getting to 3/4 temp before fans kick in. I know that the gauge is slightly high (on a freezing cold start before engine is even on, the needle sits slightly higher than it should) and sits at pretty much on half way (as opposed to just below per normal)..

Completely stock apart from the Samco rad and p/s pipes..

Any ideas on what it could be? My guess is temp sensor but what do I know.

Yeah iunno man. Was gonna see if temp sensor fixed it first but wanted to see if anyone else had a solution first.

Before you rip it to pieces, I've replaced both the thermostat & the radiator cap on that - not all that long ago...

My next step was going to be swapping the ECU temp sender to ensure both fans come on correctly.. also check the thermo fan relay & any associated fuses.

After that, we're into the horrible prospect of a water pump.

Ah ok, thanks Ben. Have sensor coming from Shhtuart so will see how we go with that then I guess.

Sorry, forgot to mention, I flushed that as well.

There was an aftermarket temp sensor in the old pipes. You are welcome to use the old pipe and am sensor to rule out the problem..

No leaks from water pump..? Is the water level OK? If water pump is fucked I would have thought there would be more issues then an overheat in traffic..

Nothing leaking anywhere. No smoke/steam or coolant dripping anywhere that I can see.

Fans only seem to be kicking in when temp goes above half.

Sounds like water pump is probably fine ... I would say temp sensor, or something with the fan relay .. Not sure if you can adjust to kick in sooner... Or if it is just totally driven by temp of water...

Last time I got an overheat problem was because someone fucked with needles on the gauge

Lol .. Which is what the main case is on this one... In Bobby, you never see the needle budge to anywhere near half way ... And in Smurf, it got there pretty quickly. I even compared how long it took Bobby to get to the 1/4 mark, and looked at the same with Smurf.. Difference was huge...

But to be safe, that was when Bennoz and I (OK mostly Bennoz) replaced the hoses with Samco's (cause the stock ones were all sh*t), did the flush, new coolant, thermostat and checked the car out.

Because I was driving against traffic, and on a highway for almost the entire trip to work (based out in the country) she never missed a beat. I also had my mechanic check over her when purchased, and he was ordering in the steering rack rubbers (to try and replace things we thought that were making the car creak) and he was sure by the condition of the car that there were no signs of anything be amiss. I only ever saw her go up to just above half way (before fans kicked in) after that...

So she should be good... And as she was parked in either the garage or the visitors spot, there were no leaks that were present on any of the concrete floors..

Yep, no leaks anywhere, no steam etc.

The gauge is showing a little bit higher than it should, but even after subtracting the extra that it is showing, would still be above 1/2.

Checking to see if new temp sensor will fix it and will also re-align gauges when I pull out the dash to fix the tacho.
