Sometimes if i'm running a bit late for work or something I don't wanna be sitting there waiting for the car to warm up on idle though.

You do need one.

Not running one leads to excess flow in the area, which leads to minimal flow in other areas, which leads to hot spots in the heads, which leads to cracked heads. Always use a thermostat.
