thanks guys, so i take it the GR and GPX's (6a12 and 6a12 mivec respectfully) have different alternators? I would of assumed having the same block they would also use the same alternator bracket and alternator. I was looking at GR ones on ebay

GR alternators are 2 pin and non-mivec only. GPX alternators are 4 pin and contiain the necessary circuitryto support mivec.

Argh I see, yeh I had noticed some were 2 pin. Just to clarify with my dying alternator (I press the brakes and my tacho and speedo would drop off lol) typical off a fouled alternator, I was still able to hit mivec. I know this cause I was racing home not wanting to be on the side off the road. I basically got home as the battery had it's last breathe. In other words mivec works even with a dead alternator.

What voltage does the volt meter read when the car is running. Its located in the upper centre console.

I have a lancer so don't have the volt meter lol, but it would now say 12+ I charged the battery and put it back in.

Get a multimeter and check what the voltage is with the car running. Should be around 14v with the car running and around 12v with the car not running.

Another test you can do is start the car and remove the negative battery terminal while the car is running. If the car shuts off alternator is bad.
