Starter motor connections always live?

Been helping Rowan remove his headers earlier and when I went to undo the bolts on the downpipe I caught the starter motor/connections to it with the bar and got sparks, almost sh*t myself.

Anyway this surprised me as the key wasn't in the ignition, i've now taken the negative lead off the battery and carried on but just wondering if this is normal or if he's got a dodgy wiring issue?
I have suspected bad wiring or earths as all sorts of things are dodgy on this car, also battery drains after a few days of not running and i'm not convinced the alternator is ok either (connectors to that have been screwed with previously as you can see extra wires / connector block on them)

That's normal as far as I'm aware. It grounds to your gearbox and always has positive power to it as it's directly connected.

The starter is supposed to have a little rubber cap over the conection, to prevent Exactly what happened.

 the first time it was really scary. I was trying to pull a steel guard cover off the starter on a Hyundai & it got jammed in there on the terminals, was too hot to touch after 30 seconds & by the time I had the battery terminal off it had welded itself on.
