FTO AUSTRALIA

Hi guys and gals.
Just joined, have been a member of the FTO owners club in the UK for a year now and wow this is very much the same i feel at home already

I have a little question that i hope you kind people (please be kind ) can help me with.

My boyfriend (Hostile Smoker FTO UK) and i are considering moving to austrailia. Just wondered if you guys could tell me what its like for jobs in computer programming out there, what the average price of 3 bed houses are and generally what its like.

Im definately a "home loving" girl, and the thought of moving so far is kinda scary.

So im hoping you guys can reasure me

Hi Blu,

I moved here from Ireland quite a few years ago now and it really is a great place. As far as house priced are concerned, it greatly depends upon what state you are looking to move to and also what area within that state. I can only tell you about NSW and the Sydney region. Close to the city house prices are around the AU$700,000+ mark but further out in the suburbs you can pick up some very nice places for around the AU$400,000 mark. (Not sure it'd be worth the cost or even if the mods would all be legal over there? Do you guys get away with de-cat pipes?)

Hmmmm if you want to know the truth, then I better be the "assho*e" & brake it to you before you get disappointed. Unless you are super out of ordinary programmer, if not your chance to get a job in I.T related would be very slim, because every tom/dick/hurry & his or her dogs are bloody either programmer or some network technician these days. You might able to find a job but don't expect a high pay, as lots of people are willing to work for next to nothing, & any company will explore that.

For house pricing, since you don't know which place are which/where, I’m going to give you house pricing in per capital state, ranking from the most expensive to least expensive, it doesn't matter whether its near CBD or in the bush. It’s the same for the state ranking.

1. New South Wales (But it does have lower stamp duty compare to Vic, & bigger first home buyer grant then any other state).

2. Victoria (The highest stamp duty in the bloody southern hemisphere)

3. Queensland (Price had gone up a fair bit for the past 5yrs due to investment property)

4. South Australia (Cheapest parking fine ever eheheh only $15 in the CBD)

5. Western Australia (Dam it had to be the cleanest state ever, CBD is just dam clean compare to N.S.W & Vic)

6. Tasmania (Cheap but cold, price is catching up as lots of investor heading toward this little Big Apple)

7. Darwin (hmmmm don't know if it’s the cheapest, because it’s very close to Tasmania.

I’m no expert, & I’m not pretend to be one, but I had kept my eye out for different investment property for 6-7yrs now. Now I own 3, so if you guys want any tips you welcome to PM me.

the IT industry in australia is really picking up, there was a big crash, where all the big companies moved overseas from australia a few years ago, but they say 2005 is the year for it to skyrocket again.
Its like anywhere though if you got a degree and some experiance you shouldnt have any trouble finding a job, especially seeing as australia's un employment is at record lows
It really depends on where you move though, Im not sure about Perth, but in nsw, it is a very big place, and house prices really depend on how close you are to the CBD, whilest you might find cheap housing in northen nsw or qld, you chance of getting a programmign job is slim to none.
The other factor deciding prices (at least in sydney) is ocean/water views, australians love the beach, and love a house overlooking water (or a landmark like the bridge)
If you want a job in Programmign definitly go for Melb or Sydney.

As for bringing your fto over, There are 3 ways to register an imported car for australian roads.
1) 15 years old (or more) you can pretty much register it and drive, with min fuss or costs.
2) Compliance the car to australian standards, you are looking at an overal total of around 2-3k gbp (including shipping) this is an estimate.
The problem is at the moment no one will complaince and FTO, and also the car must be fully stock.
3) this is proberbly the best method for you, if you have lived in a country for more then 12 months, you can bring the car with you. there is minimal complaince and costs for registration. your main costs will be shipping the car. before you transport the car, look up the exact ruling, because i think there is paper work before you even send the car.

If you have all your stock parts for you car you are proeberbly best to return your car to stock, sell it and bring your parts here (depending on weight and things) and buy a car already imported, you are looking at around 7,016.93 GBP for a 95-96 model.

I'll break this to you gently, the most venomous spider in the world is......wait for it.......... THE DADDY LONG LEGS, a spider that is all over England!! The only reason you it is harmless is because its fangs arent big enough to pearce skin...

As far as the others go. In 20+ years in Aust I've seen one Funnel Web (deadly, but only if you get bitten ) numerous Red Backs (venonmous to adults but can be quite serious if a child is bitten - but not at all aggressive) Most of the rest like Huntsman Spiders, which are quite large, are harmless. There is anti venom available for the dangerous ones, but seriously I havent had anyone I know bitten. Oh and flyspray is your best friend......

Hope I havent frightened you too much, I used to be terrified of spiders when I came her, but you do actually get over it a bit..

My sister traveled around all of Aussie about a year ago, she was terrified of spiders when she went out, but when i spoke to her this this morning she said "you will get used to them in no time, just shoe them out with a broom!"

I must say that i am totally i love with Aus and the idea of moving out there,apart from the spiders, although im sure i can learn to live with it

I have told the boyfriend i am going to be carrying a blow torch (to kill the spiders) and a big ass baseball bat to hit them with i'll be fine then

So we have been looking at house's, now it is down to job hunting!

You don't want to import it to Australia... You want to sell it to me... A "moving abroad must sell quick, hence £3.5k" ought to do it.

As for the spiders... don't be too scared, just make sure you have something you can collect/and or squash it with
I see a lot of them, because i live in a bushy area. In the last couple of months ive had it 3 times that ive been driving to work and theyve crawled up across my bonnet...

One of those times, i forgot about the spider as i couldnt see it anymore and ended up leaving my window open while i was in the office.. So when i drove home that afternoon i got a big fright when i noticed the spider sitting above my head inside my car. I had to pull over and squash him, before he jumped on my head or something...
But i wouldnt be too worried about them though... they eat the mozzies!

I am more scared of snakes. They are not that frequent, but thats depending where you live. As I said before, I live in a bushy area. Urban, but bushy. On Christmas eve, my Dad was standing on the driveway saying good bye to all my cousins etc... He ended up being bitten by a snake!... At the time he didnt know, but his foot had swelled and then an uncle had noticed a snake on the driveway.. I put two and two together and it was off to the hospital, even though he swore it couldnt of been and didnt want to go (he was flying out to holland on christmas day). Turns out he was actually bitten by the snake, he had a scratch where his foot had swollen that turned out to be two fang puncture marks.. Luckily it was only little and he had only small traces of venom in him, so he was given anti venom and could go home and go overseas the next day.

Moral of the stories... Wear shoes, keep windows closed/doors, or make sure they have fly screens on them and always have something you can squash them with!... (dont kill a snake though... thats illegal)
