Air Intake Completed..... almost

Well, on saturday and sunday before i went into the auto salon i worked on my air intake and DAMN an i happy =D

not only does it looks SWEET!!! but it makes the car go much nicer, and if you could only hear it, between 5-8k revs it ROARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will post pics up tonight when i get the on my comp.

I'm more than happy with the result, however, on reflection, i did pay too much for the pipe that i used (as it came with a pod filter that i didnt use - i bought another one instead)

However, all up costing ~$280 i was happy =)

I strongly recommend this easy to do upgrade to any FTO!!!

Camo,

By any chance, did you buy the K&N FIPK induction kit? because that is around the same price and also comes with a pod filter.

Just curious, because I'm looking at options for replacing the original pipe, but I'm happy with all the other parts I already own (pod, CAI etc). It's so hard to just replace the intake pipe with something in the size and shape that I want, without paying for a bunch of other stuff :?

Also keen to see the photos

cheers,
Luca

I just did an upgrade on mine - I already had the filter on & UAS in Sydney
were happy to sell me just the pipe & the air box.
Was $20 for the pipe, $70 for the box - bearing mind mines a GR.
They said they'd do the pipe only for GPX's but I didn't get a price...

the reason its not quite finished yet is that i havent got a mini pod filter for the breather, for the moment it has some good (matching colour) fabric tied over it..... dodgy i know, but it works =D

Luca, i go the K&N high flow air filter, not the whole kit.

I got a pipe that already had a filter on it, and i have that spare now (was thinking of turning it into a light)

Luca its worth going to an exhause place, and asking what they can do for you, they often have extra shiney pipe that u might be able to use (try a few cause they all have different bits)

GR's are a lot different, you cant have the same nice big pipe that you can on a GPX...

Wow Bennoz, didn't realise UAS sold just the pipe, without the rest. Always thought you had to buy the whole thing as a kit. Thanks for the tip.

Camo, so where did you get your pipe from? was it metal piping from an exhaust place?

I've had a K&N pod for years with a cold air feed from the front spoiler. I did that back when I bought the car in 99, before UAS designed their induction kit. But I've always kept the rubber pipe because it was the hardest bit to replace.

what you cant see there (and thats a good thing) is the extra brace that we attached to the bottom to secure it all in place.

We custom cut the pipe, from an bolt on air intake for a Commodore VN-VR.

fits perfectly and hold everything in place nicely!

pipe looks good mate, you just have to try and put the air filter in an enclosure, so that it's not sucking in hot air.

no offence Camo but that pipe is too close to the engine and its not even facing on an angle towards the air hole.
Your definately sucking in hot air than anything else

Good job Camo, just couple of questions. Have you secure the actual air filter? Because i can't tell from you pics, & you don't want the air filter to bounce up & down while u driving.

And 2nd, are you going to make a custom heat shield like Mikey or Steve had develop? As mil said, you are sucking in lots of hot air at the moment. I've seen both in real life on a FTO, & they both are in high quality & well designed, so the choice is yours. :D

I know you want some pics so I borrow them from the http://www.Nismo.com.au website  & mikey's posts

or even if you have a look at the DIY section of Mark21 'intake' his piping is very similar to yours but takes the filter away from the engine and towards the air intake area...

good effort though and does look good.

sorry to go off track but steve would UAS look again at making an aluminium version of the intake pipe? It seems a lot of people are keen on the "alum" effect.. Could it be done to replicate the exact dimensions of the original intake pipe so that it was a straight bolt on and thus people didnt have to change air filters and/or it would fit straight into the factory air box?

I know last time it was made in rubber to cut costs but how much more would alum cost?

like i said, its not finished yet.....

i still plan on doing a CAI and i have a few bright ideas for this =)

The pod, although close to the engine, is still fine and gets good airflow due to the big hole that now exists where the air box went. But dont worry, i will be doing more work on it =)

the pipe, as i said above, is also held on (apart from where it connects to the engine and lies flat against the battery) also via a bracket below it that bolts onto the battery tray. it is VERY stable and all fits perfectly!

My advice to you if you want to turbo your FTO, then don't spend anymore money on your car, as turbo setup & N/A setup are totally different. And start eating rabbit's food for a while as you need fair bit of money (at least $15k) if you want a proper reliable turbo setup, & not some sh*t slap together & blow up within couple of months. Don't forget the maintenance side, petrol cost, & insurance as well.

And also are you after straight line performance (which i think its a wrong car to do so, since its a FWD) or a car that can give you some trill during twisty?

Even if his after power in the twisties i would recommend a smaller turbo setup so he can still control it on the bends.

well a turbo is more of a long term dream rather than a short term reality =)

next i want to connect my mivec controller that i cant find the manufacturer for, so i cant find the specs, so i cant connect it =|

then comes rims, then a kit =)

tyrbo and a leather interior is still at least 3 or 4 years off =)

That is a nice looking pipe Cam..:)
Don't forget the maintenance side, petrol cost.......
hmm.....painnnnnn..... :o

Is it brendan who has the CAI heat shield done out of a car sun visor?
That seemed to be a pretty good, cheap and easy way to do it.
