RPW Camshafts test

As everyone know you can buy RPW cams for the MIVEC engines.

They are quite expensive though and there is no proof that they work.

So I came up with an idea :!:

I want to put some cams in my car at some stage in the near future, but like I said they are expensive with no proof that they work. So I was thinking, maybe everyone who is interested in cams can put in some money towards buying them and I will have them tested on my car.

If they work well I'll refund the money to everyone who has contributed, but if they don't work I will have them removed, talk to RPW and depending on the outcome may refund partial money.

Basically if we get about 20 members putting in $50 it would be great!

maybe talk with RPW about full sponsorship of your car.

Hmmmm how much is the cam from RPW again? Was it $2200?

I think with GST they are roughly $2500
Add to that the springs, and cam gears + fitting + tuning.

So in the end this is a very expensive exercise for something no one knows anything about.

Is anyone willing to go ahead with this?

Maybe you should speak to RPW about this, and see what they say.

Just ask if they will give you a full refund if you’re not happy with the results. As this will be a good advertising for them if the FTO Clubs in both AU and the UK can see they work, and if they do work then we could start a group buy for the cams.

I think if you mention that it will lead to a group buy, if they work. Then they would be stupid not to take up the offer.

From a business point of view, an increase of power is an increase, whether 0.5kw or 10kw, but if the customer didn't like the power increase & decided to return it, & claim they don't work, do they still have to refund them? Don't forget these set of cam will became second hand too, so a full refund would be out of the question already.

RPW had tried a Group Buy here before, & David from RPW did log on to this forum a fair bit back then to answer member's questions, but it end up with lots of people just talk but no money, & there were a negative vibe from one particular member toward RPW, as all he does was criticizing their products. :roll:

So I won't blame RPW if they are not interested with this deal, on the other hand, they are doing very well with the UK FTO Club. So Spetz, you might want to try their forum instead.

I'll try talking to Dave but from past discussions it seems to lead to the fact that even though he is willing to do something of this sort, he wants the car to be in perth so he can do the installation/tuning.

As far as them not working, I think what should be looked at is value for money. To be honest with such a price tag I don't think they will ever be good value, but say if they do increase power by 30kw (with all the necessary other engine work done beforehand) that would kind of justify the price.

At the same time... all this other work + cams will cost more than their 2.5L Hybrid MIVEC and this would never compete.
But all this work + 2.5L = :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:

the 2.5 litre mivec hybrid... is that a whole engine, or does it involve modifcations to your own engine?

You bacically do an engine swap with RPW. Don't know how "direct bolt on" it is though, as no one had try it before.

so you would want to make srue your own engine is running pretty well before contemplating this ?

Well the funny part is, they send u the engine first, & then you send them your engine. At least thats what David from RPW told me. Of course, you paid them in full before you recieve the hybrid engine.

I guess you then need to factor in labour etc to have the engine fitted....
does their engine come with a warranty etc? do you know the state of kms etc???

Doesnt seem to bad a deal, if your in need of a new engine anyway (like I may be)

If you factor everything in, freight of the engines & labor, it should be around $10k.

And for the rest of the answer, you really have to ask RPW.

rpw have sold one set of cams c/o the garage in the UK and have never heard back about them...

the fact that only one set has been sold and no one is shouting about the gains speaks volumes in my opinion...

i've had quite lengthy email exchanges with them on cams when Crow came back to me about the R&D costs and their blatant refusal to give me any sort of data has made up my mind to give Crow what is essientally a blank cheque to build a few sets for testing...

Crow Cams are the guys that make all the V8 super car cams and live on creating good stuff...

i'm probably not going to be able to get onto this project until next year due to the cost of R&D on this project of mine.

Maybe Smorison you can start some sort of a fundraiser?
Although as far as how good RPW cams are I don't think there is enough info to go from. There was 1 set sold and there was no feedback.


As for the 2.5 Hybrid, it's all new.
it's got new forged pistons and conrods, completely recondition head which is race ported, all new belts, water pump alternator etc.
It really is not that bad of a price.
But they are in Perth. Pay for that engine to come down, pay to send yours back, pay to install, pay for a computer, pay for installation and tuning.
I am figuring 11K+ for this.
That is assuming you have a near new heavy duty cltuch installed.

I will have a chat with Dave soon when I take my car over there for a service. Probably next week.
I will try and get him to come on here to answer your questions but as from past experience Im not sure he will.

If you look at http://www.rpw.com.au they have a special on this month for 6A12 non mivec cams.

Heaps cheaper

But dosn't really help us mivec owners :(
