Gearbox oil?

I read here a few times about some really good gearbox oil for the FTO's? I think it might have been redline oil

Can someone tell me what brand and which one of the series it is? The viscousity of it, how many litres the gearbox takes?

I have a Version R gearbox with LSD

I use Redline 75w-90 in mine - same box as yours. If I remember rightly it took around 2.3 litres.

There are other types of Redline such as Shockproof, but I was told (and have heard) that that is a bit hard out for a road car...

I had shockproof due to the fact my car has lsd.

Redline is one the best brand gearbox oils.

From what I recall manual is about 2.5litres but auto is significantly more.

Umm, anyone wanna post up a quick linky to changing your gearbox oil or replacing the fuel filter? I gotta do both those soon :(

I can probably do a DIY on the gear box oil but I'm SOOOOOO poor atm. Anyone wanna fund my DIY project?

btw, I've been told that if you over fill your gearbox it runs a bit smoother. I have tried it once and I did notice it to be a lot easier to shift gears. It takes about 2 and something litres to fill your gear box up.

I used redline shockproof light weight from memory, it took like 2 weeks before I started to notice the difference. Maybe it needs time to settle in

The local RalliArt garage here has been using "Mobil Agri Fluid 424" in my manual gearbox for 5 years now. It costs a lot less than that Redline stuff, and works a treat. Makes for good, smooth shifts and has protected the internals extremely well.

Even with the new LSD, we're still using it... just with a Mitsubishi LSD friction modifier additive.

So there's an alternative for you, anyway.

Yeah a DIY would be great

So what is the verdict? The BEST gearbox oil for my car (LSD equipped) is???? Price isn't a factor really

Also, is it a good idea to add a transmission fluid cooler?
I am thinking of taking the car to the track

Neither Boris or myself had a transmission oil cooler on our cars and we went on the track.

Some people recommend them, others don't.

If you going to install an oil cooler, make sure you also have the right thermostats replacement as well or you going to have a mighty good time during winter or a long trip, as it might over cool & the engine need the right temperature to run.

The mechanic who will be doing the install said the thermostat he'll put in will be set at around 86 degrees celsius
