Hey guys,

I am rebuilding a 6A12 at the moment and wa wondering what I should get done while it's apart?

The heads have already been serviced and ported
And the bottom end so far is just getting cleaned, balanced to 1 gram tolerance and rebuilt.

Is there anything to do? What is knife edging of the crank, or counter balancing it? is this needed as it's a V6?

1. Is it MIVEC, and
2. Whats it costing? (ballpark at this stage)

Knife edging of a crank shaft, give the outer extremes of each section a smooth cutting surface that allows the crank to pass through the sump oil without creating turbulence in the oil - see pic. This crank has been edged on both sides as well (bit excessive but hey)

Counter balancing is when the crank shaft is precisely balanced with the flywheel (and the piston rods depending on how much you pay.) Small amounts of metal are shaved off the crank to do this. It ensures there are no additional loads or forces excerted on the crank bearings due to a wobbly out of balance load. Doing this primarily increases engine life & durability. On a performance motor, it reduces the risk of detonation at high rpm.

I don't suppose you fancy doing a 'how to' with piccy's? I'd love to be able to tackle an engine rebuild! Are there many special tools involved?

It'd be about the size of a Haynes manual!

I don't know how much it's costing...
Harris Engineering in Sydney is doing it (to my knowledge).

I guess it sounds pretty stupid but this is the explanation:
I got an engine conversion done, which came with a warranty, and it turns out that one of the main end bearings or something is stuffed, therefore the mechanic who did the engine conversion is replacing my engine, with one that is about to get rebuilt

I don't know if shaving the heads is a good idea... I don't really want to risk it, and considering the other things going onto it I think the car should go pretty quick as is.

I will however try to find out how much it would have cost, but I don't think it'll be cheap, considering just the gasket set is quite expensive to my knowledge

So who is paying for the rebuild? the mechanic or you spetz? How major is the rebuild? Taking the whole thing apart etc? Extensively trying to blueprint the engine back to its orginal specifications or just replacing most major parts?

If you've spun a big end bearing, then thats whole kit & caboodle out & rebuilt.... the crank is the heart of the motor.... big bucks.

Yeah it's the mechanic paying for it

And as for the rebuild, it is a complete rebuild.
I've seen the engine, and the block is sitting by itself with all the internals out...
I don't think it will be blueprinted, it would cost me $400 to get it blueprinted, and engine builder told me these engines are quite good from factory and wouldn't need blueprinting and wouldn't bring out any gains

Blueprinting, is getting all tolerances, clearences etc to spot on factory specs. Because in mass produced engines, each engine varies a tiny bit from engine to engine and the actual specs it has to be
