i reckon its the ball joint
if u jack up the car
try and see if u can turn the front right wheel with your hands
(without taking any nuts out)
if its loose
your ball joints are gone and if not fixed soon your wheel mite fly out while u are driving

If it's a hissing sound it could be that your power steering level is just low and might need replacement.

Ball joint shouldn't cost you any more than about 60-70 bucks. Quite easy to replace - bout 20 minutes would do it. Just keep in mind that once it changed you'll need a wheel alignment.
I dunno, most steering knocks I've had in the past have been steering rack related. I'd get down to Pedders or similar & get a 14 point check
