i got my air intake done yesterday, the muffler place who was fixing it up for me didnt have a small pipe to fit the little rubber pipe from the manifold. he told me its ok to leave a pipe just dangling from the manifold .is it or was he just bs me? i know u can put like a little filter there or an oil catch can. how do i hook up an oil catch can if i wanna do that? once i got it out and drove a bit i noticed my fan coming on a lot as well as engine temp a bit higher than normal. im guessing this is coz the pod is not boxed as yet. or is it coz of the pipe just hanging thru? sorry bout the lousy description.

Isn't that the crank case breathing pipe?

There's a bit of debate on whether or not you actually need a pipe running from there to the intake tubing. I would say that if they did it from factory that you should do it too.

The engine heat may be from the un-boxed filter, but I've driven around without a boxed filter before and my temps were normal. Perhaps it was just a hot day?

Give it another day or two and see if operating temps change at all.

This is the pipe he's referring to, it attaches to the engine just a little bit before the throttle body.

yea the crank case breating pipe.right now i just have a pipe hanging thru.exactly where buckets drawn out kev. what would the benefits be if i got an oil catch can? or is it just rice factor on a n/a car? would it be just as good if i get a small filter fitted up there ? yea it was a hot day so im kinda figuring the heat was from that .

Well technically the breather should be hooked up to the intake pipe as it was originally. Its crank case pressure breather - and it is technically a metered (or monitored) air flow rate done by the flow sensors. Hence the factory setup is hooked onto the intake. I found when running without it connected at all, the car idled very high because the ECU compensates for the missing intake air pressure and opens up the air flow sensor.

So, by putting a little filter on it, it keeps the crank case pressure up & 'fools' the ECU into thinking there's nothing wrong. My car idles fine & Air / fuel maps on the dyno show no sign of any issues!

hmm i did notice that. the car sure did idle higher than normal . would an oil catch help at all or is it just crap for an fto?

Hey, it's cool, I'm not tech man myself.....you just had me confused by saying oil catch can on an inlet for air.

It catches the oil and moisture in the blow-by gas that causes carbon and sludge build-up in the intake system and the engine.
