hi everyone,

having some problem with the cigarette lighter [it doesn't work] tested with a multimetre and it seem one of the wire has no current.

Anyone come across this or know where I can connect the wire to, to get it working again?

any help is appreciated

Have you taken the centre console apart and had a look behind it? Maybe a wire fell off.

Try checking the fuse =)

I'd find it an *extremely* unlikely event for one of the wires to come loose on that, they're a bastard to remove with pliars!

Ciggie lighter fuse is number 3 in the internal fuse box (in drivers footwell)
It is a 15 amp fuse A smoker knows

Mine works but my in-car phone charger wont work and i have tried several others but to no avail

damn i check my fuse and it's all good, the wire should be fine i checked hmm what else could it be

checked the fuse and is fine
checked that too, the wiring seems fine too

umm... if the wiring is fine and the fuse is fine then nothing should be wrong


did you run a multimetre over the wires? did (or does) the car have rice lighting in it? was that hacked into the ciggy lighter (common place)...

could take you a little bit of time but i'm guessing its wiring just not super obvious

quick point...when you say "there is no current running through it" how did yu check? you can only measure current with a multimeter with the probes in series (inline) with the wires (current path)

The surround of the lighter is the ground while the +Ve is in the end somewhere (look at the car charger as a guide) find the spots and see if you get 12V...

Maybe you earth to the lighter is screwed...as you say you have checed the wires are connected...but maybe the other ends are not!

Take off the console again and check there is 12V between the earth and the +Ve (dunno what color when I took mine off) and go from there...

oh and make sure the ignition is ON!

it could be the contacts in the cigarette lighter itself, and the element on the lighter bit aswell, they could be dirty and not making contact.

just make sure I'm doing the right thing.. could someone direct me the right way of testing the voltage. and also the type of setting I should use on the multimetre..

I currently putting the black pin from the multimetre to the black wire on the back of the lighter and the red pin to the ..brown? wire. there is no reading showing on the multimetre. I change to all the setting.. but no good.

Fact:
- The cigarette lighter does not heat up.
- Any phone charger or device that take charge from the cigarette lighter does not work.

I forgot before :

check to see if the plug isnt conecting on the back of the unit first. Sometimes the heat created from these things makes the center pin plug spread and not make connact. if this is so then just give the connection a little squeeze with pliers. should fix the problem.

If not its hard to give a basic lesson in text with out pic...take a pic and we can go form there.


1, check fuses
2, Identify the wires and what they do (+Ve and GND)
3, Setup your multimeter and ensure the probes are in the right sockets (not the mA ones ffs!) Then set your multi meter to the right voltage range (if not auto ranging) this will be 20V range (i.e. max 20v not 2V for example)
4, Test the wires for voltage when the Ignition is switched to accessories.

Geez, I was reading this thread and had nothing to add as my ciggy lighter was working! Now it has suddenly stopped!

I took off the surround (and bloody broke it - ive taken it off heaps of times without problems) and checked my iring which is fine.

I suspect that the actualy unit itself is faulty. I've been repairing teh cracked surround so haven't opened up the actual ciggy lighter itself to have a look yet - I will look at it tonight and let you know how I go.

I had a look at this last night and discovered that it wasnt my lighter but teh hands free car kit that was faulty. Time for a new car kit for me!

Not a problem I had mine off on the weekend actually. Once we have some pics it should be easy to figure out which bit isn't working

The centre (black) connector should be the +12/15V I'm pretty sure..and the white connector should be the GND... Make sure you have the probes in the meter pins inside...

Firstly...can you confirm which holes you have your probes connected into in the multimeter? i.e make sure its one for the voltage...
with units from DSE the GND is usually the whol to the far right and the VDC socket is the one to its left...if thats the case you have an issue ...maybe its the earth..lets check...

Leave the back probe on the inner connector as you have...then find a bit of exposed metal under the center console (there is one right under there) and put your red probe on to this (black/red doesn't matter if the worng way around the reading will be negative..no biggie..

Tell me if that works...
