Change your gearbox oil. Pull apart you shifter assembly and regrease all the joints.

Do what bennoz said, if that doesn't fix it, it could be your syncro rings are worn, I had that problem in second gear on my subie, basically it involves taking the gearbox apart and getting the cogs of the shaft with a press and changing them and putting it all back together.

Simple little thing - what is the length of the gear knob? When I bought my car, it had a tiny little Razo ball type, and it was really hard to shift. Changed to something bigger to allow more leverage - like using a different gearbox.

May not be that simple for you - but you never know. Sometimes we overlook the most simple things...

Manual or Auto ?

If manual like Ben said, change the gearbox oil, it's amazing what it can do, I use Syntrax, by Castrol.

didnt u just have a new clutch fitted? if you did, they would normally change the gearbox oil at the same time?

Mine's the same, and can be really hard when it's cold (UK cold that is!). When I first drive off I often go first to third to save the fight into second. It gets better after a couple of minutes.

I'm guessing that my gearbox is just worn. I did change the oil to try and improve it, but it didn't get any better, although I have heard of other people getting good results.
