Got the clicks!

Hey,

I've got a bit of an annoying issue with my baby. There's what can only be described as a "clicking" noise coming from my steering.

I first noticed it just after I bought the car, and I asked my mechanic and he said not to worry, because it happens sometimes. He explained it was due to the bolt and/or washers of the joins in the arm getting stuck, and just making a noise as they're forced to release or something -- i forget exactly what he said, but that was my understanding of it.

I didn't stress about it then because I had made the guy change the steering boots as part of the sale. So I just assumed it needed some time to settle in, or something.

Anyway, I notice it mostly when I'm stuck in peak-hour traffic and crawling along, it'll give off a few clicks as i'm slowly turning and moving slowly in general. I also notice it sometimes when I go around corners at normal speed, i can hear the clicking coming from the left-hand side of the car.

I really want to know what it is, and if it is of any concern, but most of all, I want it to STOP! It makes my car sound like a piece of sh*t lol ;)

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

I'm only going to have a guess here but it sounds like one of your CV joint/s are worn, look under the car and have a look at the drive shafts, each side will have 2 joint, check if the rubber boot on the CV joints if they have split open...If one has split there is your problem.

yeah CV joint. If u have caught it early it will easy to fix...maybe $100 tops...but if they have been worn...hmm might be much more.

could also be the steering arm? my mums lancer failed a warrant for a loose steering arm, had to open it up and locktight it,

is there a bit of slack in the steering, ie, can u move the steering wheel a little without acctually turning the wheels?

but yeah, cv joint as well

I get that hissing noise as well.
I showed it to Lee in Melbourne if there is anything wrong.
His comments was to the steering wheel oil. He was saying that espacially what Mitsu uses and other Aus products are not suitable for FTO. Apparently Japanise cars need a special oil for this, which he didnt have it by than.
I still got that hissing by the way. You hear it more in full lock and pushing further.
