Hi,
Ok so driving today at 60km/ph and all of a sudden my front wheels locked up (no brakes pushed what so ever) my car just slid for about 3 metres which then caused some guy to run up my arse. So one my car has been rear ended and two can anyone tell me why the hell my wheels would just lock up like that without anyone touching the brakes. Reason I know the brakes weren't touched was a witness on the road said they didn't see brake lights and the driver behind said that they didn't see brake lights and this is why he hit me. So yea if you can give me ANY insight as to why my car has done this to me please do as I am pretty devasted and would like to know if it can be fixed and if anyone has heard of an FTO doing this before.
Cheers,
Faye.

Was the engine still running? Was it still locked on afterwards/now?
Very, very odd....

That is really wierd!
i second what's already been asked, where they locked up afterwards, and do you know if your engine stalled *before* it happened? Tip or manual? Do you ABS or traction control?
If here cars still a bit drivable then check out the brakes (at low speed of course, maybe just a roll) and the handbreak etc, try to get someone to check the lights for you.

My fto is tip / auto. One time when it was having a service, after they had completed the service and were backing the car out of the workshop the car just stopped.
I mean they were driving it out and then it just fully locked up and decided not too move. what had happened was the one of the rear tailights was shorting, this was sending some sort of message to the computer/tip box to put the car into another gear (all of a sudden like park or reverse even. The mechanics had mentioned that it was lucky that it had happened in the workshop cause their was a chance that i could have been driving and then all of a sudden rear tailight short, tip thinks its suppossed to changed to park or reverse (one of the 2, im thanks it was park) and the car would just lock up.
So yeah, my advice based on this story would be when fixing the car get them to look over ALL the electrics.
BTW sorry to hear about your car, it sucks

, just remeber cars can be fixed humans can't, so yeah dont be tooo down.

that is odd, up untill the point you said your car ran fine afer i would have said the diff had crapped out, was it definatly a front wheel lock or a rear wheel lock? both side wheels?
was it wet?
errrrrrm
cv joint? bearings?
if its both sides that locked up it could be electrical?
did the engine cut out at all? any funny sounds or noises before or during?
if you were doing 60k's and it only slid 3m id say it wasnt a lock up.
odd, very odd

well if it has only happened to a tip, I might just add this in...I think what happen is that the tip/auto gearbox engaged 2 gears at the same time, this will cause the gearbox to lock up which will them lock up the wheels, like 3rd and 4th gear at the same time.

going back to your L license, no.1 rule is leave enough braking distance for the car infront of you to emergency stop, so that guy was in the wrong for rear ending u

ok thats physically impossible

its not the person who ran up your asses fault, its your fault because the car was faulty, and there is a witness to say that the break lights didnt work

well she didnt brake, so of course the brake lights didnt work.
it doesnt matter how/why someone hit you from behind, if they hit you from behind it means they were following too closely to stop in time and avoid an accident. its automatically their fault. sad but true

This is sort of correct, I am not lawyer, but the person who hit you, can file for comparative negligence. which will reduce the amount you are payed to repair your car. Quote

Keep in mind, however, that even if you have been rear-ended, in a few circumstances your own carelessness may reduce your compensation under the rule of "comparative negligence." A common example is when one or both of your brake or tail lights were out, especially if the accident happened at night

yeah but this had nothing to do with brake light failure, it was a mechanical problem, theres no negligence on her part because she could not control the problem, and then she was hit from the rear by someone who was too close to avoid an accident.
"dont be a feeeeeeeeuuuuuuuulllllllll obey the 2 second ruuuuuuullllllleeeeeeeeee" or however brocky says it

It's not physically impossible, with automatic gearboxes they acctually with have 2 gears engaged, when it shifts to the next gear one gear will slowly disengage and the next gear will start to engage, this is so the gear will change smooth...there might of been a glitch in the ECU, solinoids or some thing causing both gears to engage.
