Next engine mod, for roughly $1000

Ok, so I had a spare grand, and was planning on DVD player/screen in the car.

But now, I am thinking about more power. I was thinking of high compression forged pistons but then not enough cash for rods :(

The engine is in pieces at the moment so anything goes!

Engine mods so far:
-Ported & polished heads
-Match ported intake runners
-Either modified stock plenum OR plenum cut off, runners shortened and new plenum welded with 65mm Magna TB (might overbore this if possible)
-Shaved heads (increase CR)
-Balanced to 0.25 grams
-RPW HPC extractors, high flow cat, fuel pressure regulator, 2.5" mandrel exhaust
-Intake pipe, CAI, Apexi power intake filter
-Shotpeened rods, maybe melybednum coated piston skirts
-0-ringed/sleeved block with new bearings, gaskets etc
-Mines VX-Rom with GReddy E-manage with injector & ignition harness


I am thinking of Nos, but not sure if I want to go this way.
I can get cam regrinds but not enough cash for springs, and still stock internals and rev limiter :(
Otherwise not sure where I can get a few more ponies from

i though the emanage took care of the rev limit issue.

wow looks like some awsome mods...be awsome to see it back in the car and going.

you might want to think about mods to make the car more drivable like suspension/breaks.

do you have a lsd? you could put it towards one of them or a lightweight flywheel or something, or clutch :)

would b interesting to see if changing the mivec point lower after all those mods would make a difference 8)

Have coilovers, strut braces, swaybars, bushes, LSD, heavy duty clutch, upgraded brakes etc

I have been thinking of DVD screen, carbon bonnet, interior retrim etc but considering the engine is apart now, I think it is best to spend money on the engine

Anyone?? Anything??


I will see now if someone will fit/tune a nos kit for $1000 :)

Hasn't been dyno'd, but I am really hoping for about 150-170kw atw depending on dyno

Jesus f**king christ, goodluck with that :P If you scrape together another 9k you could turbo charge it and achieve those kw figures easy :)

Yeah I got the insulator gaskets too, forgot to mention


Another Lancer with an FTO engine did 120kw atw on a dyno that is quite accurate and 132kw on a dyno that reads a bit high.

This is on the original engine (no rebuild), in 4th gear, with just FPR, extractors, high flow cat, exhaust, magna TB but plenum not modified

And, from searching on the UK FTO forums, someone got 24hp more atw just from doing a head service and decking the heads (raising compression)
So, I think I should at least get 30kw more than that other lancer, bringing me to about 150-170kw depending on dyno


Unfortunately even though the list is not that extensive, this is still around 10 grand worth of work on it :(

LOL. I stock r33 gtst only puts out ~140 atw with a 2.5l turbo on 0.6-7bar boost.

24hp = 17kw and minus the losses equates to about 11kw atw. Your starting at about 95kwatw...so now your at 106. With the otehr mods I give u up to 25kwatw so your at ~130.

best test. line up against a fast car and see how you go...forget the dyno its a tuning tool only and if u look around on other forums you will see thread after thread about how inconsistant their results are.

if u want big numbers...u need a new engine...if u want a fast car u need rwd or awd.

Yeah 150 - 170 is a bit ambitous... you cant compare pommy dyno figures to ours, they get much higher readings due to the air density difference.

If your that keen on staying N/A you have to go to town on the heads & cams, its the only way. Unless you wanna take the old school philosophy of "you cant beat cubes" & get the block bored.

If your not gonna put a hairdryer or blower on it, I wouldnt waste your money on things like molybednum coated piston skirts & forged rods. Thats all precautionary stuff to gaurd against blowing the motor up when your pump major poundage in.

Get oversized valves put in the head, heavy duty double valve springs with a good seat pressure for snappy valve return times, bring the compresison up (to a streetable level, not something rediculous like 13:1, try 11.5:1 or similar.) Then you could focus on the block, bore it out & get bigger pistons to suit. Then, if you manage to find someone who is willing to put a filthy big grind on the cams, then do it. Its the one item on N/A motors that brings a major hp increase if done right.

And do it... you know you want NOS!

Im contemplating putting the happy gas on myself... especially considering I have a kit sitting on my other car at home (which hasnt been driven in 5 years!)

ya NA is all about bore and getting the mixture in fast ... and as much as u can! and still make it drivable...its like wacking a great big turbo and FMIC in your car...boosting it up to 30psi...will go fast but hard to drive to safeway :P

those would be some serious mods for your fto.NOS wioll give u that massive boost when u wanna hammer it...oh wait..not for street ?? arh well as long as u don't get caught - or explode!

yeah LOL...thats why I got the othr car...I'm still not happy with the FTO as a daily driver though...got a few more things to get it right...some rattles and some noise form the rear right suspension...i think its the drop link bushes...once its all quiet...I'm happy..:P

but NOS...would be fun at the lights.

common lol, your insulting everyone who is spending money on their fto to make it go fast cos its their dream

everyone knows Mitsiman (RPW) owns a daily-driven 11sec fwd magna with the standard engine and 2 hair dryers ;)

a fast car for me is low 14 seconds cos thats all i want for motorkhana/superkhana racing, and i dont wanna go turbo if i dont have to because the engine needs a rebuild in any case.... so im personally interested in spetz ugprades

I think the engine will make some decent power.
Way more than 130kw.
For starters just the fact that it is being rebuilt I think will give it more power. Most FTO's have been sitting on 8000rpm in their life and thrashed.
Plus the other mods...
But I don't wanna jinx myself or anything. I guess I will just post back the dyno result once I get it :)

I was thinking of cams, but with stock internals what is the point??

They'll cope - dont get sucked into the rpw pricelist.... Its not like you'll get another 100kws out of the cams.
