Hey all my GR FTO is having bloody lifter issues! There ticking at startup goes away and when i hit operating temperatures the ticking comes back only when idling though. When rpms goes abover 1.2K the tapping stops so i guess its an oil pressure problem. Or maybe the Castrol Maganatec 10W-40 is too thin during high operating temperatures?

Would a 10W-50 or 10W-60 quiet down my lifters when warm?

Could if be something else though? oil pump or something?

I dont know what you mean by lifter problems but the noise could be your tappets.

I'm using Castrol Maganatec 10W-40 in my GPX and have no tappet issue (touch wood). The tappets on GPXs can be adjusted, but not the GRs. Apparently, you can get replacement tappets for the GRs though. Came across this thread from ftooc.org:

FYI, GRs have self-adjusting tappets...

Does any one know how much it'll be to replace the lifters?
Parts price mainly I guess...

I want to replace some that are worn out on my gpx.

Also, does any one know if you can replace them individually? Meaning they are not tied together some how?

If any one has any prices regarding the lifters could you let me know please.

If you have a GPX, you don't have to replace them. The tappets can be adjusted on the GPXs by increasing its clearance.

The lifters on the GPX can still wear especially if they were adjusted to tightly...loose is better if it has to be out at all. I had a quote for 17 dollars for each one and yes as far as I know they can be replaced individually.

And yes they all do wear out and once they wear out too much, adjusting them doesn't make any difference.

I didnt want to open up another forum for my question related to lifters/tappets, as this has been covered many times.
So, will add my question here;

Just serviced my car at the Northern Mitsubishi, and I asked them to check if the car has a tappet noise which needs to be adjusted.

Here is exactly what they said to me.
Apparently my FTO GPX does not have any tappet noise, however, it has slight hydrolic lifter noise. They said - for GPX's - tappets are adjustable, however, hydrolic lifters are not. So, I asked them how to get rid of this slight noise. Their reply was to completely renew the hydrolic lifters, which apparently cost too much money.

Above answer, which provided by Mitsubishi is very confusing for me.

Isnt the hydrolic lifters are the tappets for a GPX, which is adjustable?

What do you think about the above comments?

Me thinks you should get your car serviced by someone who knows FTOs (not Mitsubishi)

tappets and lifters are two different words for the same thing.

GPX has manually adjustable tappets
GR has automatically adjustable hydraulic lifters

They don't know what they're talking about =P

6A12 with MIVEC head has solid (adjustable) lifters.
6A12 without MIVEC has hydraulic lifters.

Hydraulic lifters do not require adjustment, though they might require a clean up if they get filled up with gunk (which usually means someone hasn't been changing their oil =P )

Thats exactly what I thought.

Actualy, I called SL Motorsports to service my car, however, they are in Springvale, and they asked to keep my car for 2 days, way too far away from Northcote.

Maybe I should start looking for a proper service centre for my FTO in the northern suburbs, for the next service.

Mitsubishi Australia makes me lough...

So a clean of the GR tappets should fix all problems? Has anyone ever come across a totally stuffed tappet that even when cleaned is still noisy?

Im going to clean mine this weekend but think that a couple of them are beyond cleaning...

Rob (kaveman) has just replaced his engine as all 24 tappets were screwed... they cost about 70.00-80.00 each and a new engine was cheaper


the tappet has a tiny oil orifice that gets clogged and is very hard to clean... i would imagine an acid bath would work well... just depends on whehter or not they are damaged.

70-80 each! thats pretty rich! the mitsu 4g serioes of engines have a similar problem and the lifters for those were only about 36 each from mitsu (half that price from hyundai)

I saw that Kempy's sells them for 20nzd each

I think I might clean them first - if it doesnt work - ill replace the noisy ones.

umm... hand cranking hte engine once it's open could be a possibility... or maybe just replacing the ones that are pitted and look damaged

i think to bring out the noise of a noisy lifter you have to work the mechanism really quick, eg with the engine on. Hand cranking wont be quick enough. Well when i looked at my lifter physically they all looked fine, but some where noisy.

yes kempys do sell the lifters pretty cheap:
