Downhill Transmission problems

Hey guys,
Been wondering any bros out there that might haf the same problem as mi. Everytime when i m driving down a steep slope in D Gear(automatic),the engine will drop gear from the 4th to 2nd if i gently brake the car or i did not press the accelator. I just change my transmission box called the ISC control motor. Is there any else that i need to fix? Thankx for all the help.

I think that's pretty standard for the Tip; mine does it also. I assumed it was to maintain the speed limit as you're travelling down the hill -- it only kicks in on certain angles, and I think the gear is dependant on the angle, aswell. Mine doesn't always go to 2nd, it sometimes goes to 3rd.

That's just my observation.

Personally I always drive in sports mode because the intelligence of the Tip automatic is rather frustrating.

happens to me too, used to scare me, keep on thinking that i need to change the oil (which i do anyway, just been lazy), but yeah i think it's more to do with the "intelligence" of the automatic, i think its more to do with the rev count and speed, i.e. 70km/h, 4th gear, sitting on like... 1.5k rev, it's going to change down for you.

i just learnt to deal with it by going into the "sports" mode when i'm going down hills lol

yeah man.. i was thinking it mught be the ECU itself or something...since then i haf been using the TIP too..haha..thanx for the info dudes

This is definitely a feature of the automatic ECU to keep the car at a steady speed when travelling down hill.

To summarise, your tip box acts the way you teach it, so id you don't want it to do this, either keep it in manual mode, or stop driving like a granny :wink:

Speaking of which does the tranny computer only log the way you drive in 'Automatic' mode, 'Tiptronic' mode or both?

Thanx Supplanter for that info...i was pissed by RACQ actually coz they found this a "problem" and said my transmission is erratic and goes on saying abt how unworthy import cars are...

I just thought it was pretty clever when i first experienced it, it feels like down shifting in a manual car, but only it does it by itself. Its brilliant. :D

only when u dont need to in a manual and u did not expect it, well that was my first time anyway, i almost shyt myself, thought i spent my life savings on a lemon lol.

The way these cars work is incredible. Have a read through some of the tech manuals about it. Mitsi call it their "Neural Network" (They reckon it simulates the human brain, good bit of mitsi BS). The ECU, TCL, ABS and Auto trans all talk to one another.
The auto trans is actually smart enough to try and figure out if you are the "normal" driver of the vehicle or if you are just borrowing the car! Apparently it measures the "degree of vigour" (quoted from the mitsi manual, I love the terminology they use here!) with which the vehicle is being driven. Takes info from sensors all over the car, crunches the numbers and then decides if the shifting patterns, etc need to be adjusted because your driving differently or that your mate is just taking it for a fang. Of course, it's not perfect in these measurements, but it's interesting the way they have set it all up.
Oh, BTW if you don't like having the trans downshift on you that way when your going down a hill, shift it into tip mode just before the incline. Leave it in 4th until it levels out. This tells the computer you don't like the downshifting and it'll do it less often. As far as i can tell it only "learns" when your in tip mode. I love "teaching" my auto how to drive :D

I take that you either don't drive a manual or don't drive it enough. So if i decided to slow the car down on a downhill without using the foot brake, what do i use then? :lol:

no i dont drive manual cars a lot, and i'm just lazier, braking is much less effort than down gear then having to change up again lol (i only down gear in a manual when i have to.. i.e. accelerating up a hill etc, as i said "...when u dont need to..." lol)
the way the auto in the fto down gears for you is just unexpected when u first jump into one thats all. after driving an 84 corona, then a 04 camry + a few mates cars (talking bout the auto ones of course), i really didnt expect the fto to down gear from 4th to 2nd while rolling down the hill (i.e the corona didnt down gear till u hit the accelerator pedal cos its an old piece of jumk, and the camry was a new family car, u can barely feel it when it down gears).

Try that on a long mountain downhill run and you will experience the wonderful world of brake fade. Seriously thats where i start to learn down shift a lot more then braking as I over work the brakes so much it started to smoke and faded badly :? People who followed my car thought my brakes was on fire :lol:

although I know the tip downshifts on a hill...as it annoys me...its not a good idea to do this all the time as the torque converters isn't like a manual...

although again I dont care and do it anyway.

I love the learning thing about the auto box. I was ragging the car something rotten last week and it obviously either learns quick or like mentioned above thought I was somebody different in the car, because it was changing down to third, on the level, just slowing up for a bend, at 65MPH. Sorry, dont know what that is in KPH but it is 5mpn above the speed limit here 8O

As I said, it was getting a good ragging at the time :lol:

get better brakes, or use the barrier to slow the car down, lol jk jk (went out a little while ago with a mate who just had his front end fixed and resprayed, then lost brakes on downhills, managed to stop with the gears and uphills without hurting the car, but the barriers looked mighty tempting when u r in a family sedan and u r going a "little" too fast for the corner that's rushing up at u lol)

yeah alright u have a point with that, another thing i loved about the normal automatic box in the camry, going down a montain? just leave it in 2nd lol (very lazy). but the down shifts are not predicted, as in you know its going to down gear, but u are never 100% sure on when lol.

so does anyone know for sure when the tip box learns? (i.e. in tip mode or auto mode or both)

Or you can just install AYC and ACD so you don't have to brake on the downhills? :lol:

but thank you for bringing them (AYC ACD) up though, didnt have a clue about what they were, so i just looked them up... interesting 8)
