Not sure about the rules in QLD, but in SA they can be real strict on this if you get defected. I had a big argument with Regency Park (SA's defect clearing depot) about the steering wheel on my Escort bout 4 years ago when it go defected.

The wheel has to have a little certification stamp on the back of it to show it meets a particular standard (Can't remember what it was). If it doesn't have this it's illegal. Their call center told me (during 3 separate calls) that the only brands that met this standard were MOMO and Formuling. The copper that defected me originally mentioned the wheel I had wasn't either of these brands, that's how he knew it wasn't legal.

I bought a Formuling wheel which had the stamp, but it was covered by the boss kit when fitted. Put the car through for clearance and was told they wouldn't remove the defect cos they couldn't see the stamp!

In the end the easiest way I could get it cleared was a visit to the wreckers, buy a stock wheel and fit it for the drive down there and back (they charge you for each visit too). Almost took the Formuling wheel back with me to shove it up the guys... err ... yea.

Beware.

just do what sam's planning if anything gets defected on his car, be nice to ppl and hope that they'll lend you the part (or in sam's case.... steering wheel, bonnet, etc... etc... now i think about it, probably easier for him to just find another FTO thats the same colour lol  )
