Airbags
How would one go about putting an airbag in a prefacelift? would it be a bit of work?

Re: Airbags
If it was an optional extra from factory and able to be ordered and installed at dealership then it's can't be that hard.

Re: Airbags
Those factory options were installed before people take ownership of the car. I think youll find it is more difficult than youd think

Re: Airbags
I can almost guarantee that dealership mechanics installed them upon request. We have a whole section of our workshop dedicated to pre-delivery servicing and optional extra installation. It would be quite possible, you would just need the parts and possibly a custom wiring job. Wouldn't be worth doing but definitely possible.

Re: Airbags
Yeah I'd go with near impossible. All the sensors, ecu and wiring would be a complete pain.

Yep .. Which is why they charge you so much for add-ons...Daniel2019 wrote:I can almost guarantee that dealership mechanics installed them upon request. I found this with the Swift. There were options that were done in Japan (Well Thailand for the new models now) and stuff done at the dealer.
As an example... The fog lights. If you got the lights from manufacturer, they were wired to the existing fuse box, with relay next to headlights, and all wiring leading to the relay box. On the cars without the option, some of the wiring was still there (switch to inside cabin but missing 1 part of the link, and from main wiring harness to connection point under hood but not to the fuse box or relay section).
So when a dealer put the fog lights in, they ran a stand alone relay (mounted in the engine bay), ran a separate power and ground, tapped into the fog light wire in the engine bay, and still had to attach the fog light wire under the dash to the rest of the existing switch wire.
So yes a dealer can do some simple add-ons, but if it were something complex like adding in a whole SRS system and bag, changing looms and everything else.... I don't think that would be entirely feasible for them, and they would probably order from the factory...
This being said, the steering wheel controls were standar on GL and GLX Swifts. As mine was a GA, I had no such luck. I did end up getting the wheel, and installing, however, from factory the clock spring was different. So I had to source a GLX clock spring which had the addition prong on the plug, and wiring to the wheel to complete the circuit. I since found out there were 3 different clock springs from factory.

Re: Airbags
The crush sensors for the air bag go inside the chassis rails
No you can't convert a non airbag to airbag.
Daniel, these are not new cars, it's not as easy as dropping it in at a workshop

Re: Airbags
If you can put a man on the moon you can retro fit an air bag into a FTO. Is it worth doing is another question..
