INVECS ? n00b help please

Hey guys ,

Im new to FTO's but iv just picked up one last week ... I remember reading about this "INVECS" , .. Ie , remembering your shift times etc on the autoâ€™s â€¦ Although , I really know nothing about it , or if its working â€¦ Iv driven mine for a while in tiptronic , but nothing changes â€¦ Can someone explain to me how it works ? .. if it needs to be enabled or what im supposed to do ? â€¦

INVECS II is just the name given to the automatic transmission (Intelligent and Innovative Vehicles Electronic Control System).

It's used in the 380, Grandis, etc so if you look up some of the info on Mitsu Australia's website you'll find a lot of info.

But briefly, it attempts to learn driver preferences by recording engine, steering and foot braking data. Gearshift timing is then adapted to try and match your style.

If you want it to re-adapt, reset your ECU. Just disconnect the battery negative terminal for a few minutes (turn your headlights on to discharge any residual power), then re-connect. From then on, drive like you normally do and it will pick it up.

it kinda annoyed me. you will notice it when brakeing fast for a tight corner, it will down gear for you. and going down steep hills it will down gear (which is what annoyed me). also if you drive around accelrerating fast everywhere it will know to keep it in gears longer, but then you go into city or on slow cruises and it has learnt to keep it in gear longer where you would prefer higher gear for less fuel consumption.

So I need to reset it with that battery technique in order for it to start picking up my driving style ? ...

I cant just keep driving and it will eventually set in ?

How will i know when its picked it up ?

What exactly are you hoping to 'get' from it? Most likely the differences you will find are inperceptible.. It generally won't make a massive change to how the car drives.

When you reset the ECU, it will re-learn things like ignition timing, idle speed etc based on the current state of affairs (engine, parts, tune, etc). Generally there will only be subtle variations.. You reset the ECU if you want it to pick it up again (eg if you change from a low octane to premium high octane fuel), or if you are noticing some issues with drive quality.

it will eventually set in, and it will be a graduall change, should only take a few days but by 2 week mark i would say the car would know who you are

but i personally would reset it. rid the previous owner of everything, make the car feel more yours.

Wow ok ... well yes 1 , i only use premium fuels with a slightly higher octane , which im sure it wasnt before .. Im always driving in tiptronic because i find the auto setting a bit frustrating and slow .. its almost as though it switches from first gear to fourth gear ...
I was under the impression this INVECSII might remember what RPM Im shifting at and compensate or something ..

Am I right here ? or wrong ?

So basically , I just ..

1) Remove the negative battery terminal wire for a few minutes
2) Turn lights on while its disconnected until they go flat
3) reconnect the wire and just start driving like i do normally ..

is that it ? ..

Yep. Give it about 10 minutes disconnected just to be sure.

If you really want to make sure it's tip-top, I'd recommend an auto transmission fluid flush and new filter, depending on the last time it was serviced.

If you're driving it in Tip mode all the time who cares what the transmission does you're telling it what to do. It will never shift up for you and will only shift down when it needs to because you've fallen asleep.

It should compensate pretty quickly. I can spend a lot of time motorway driving when the auto really does nothing but then when I gave my car a real thrash on some twisty roads it was changing down to third at about 70mph, must be about 100kph(?), so it obviously learned within a few miles that I wanted to keep the revs above 4 1/2 K
