Roof Dynamics

Post by Nacho »

I can't seem to find any information on the internet or the workshop manual about this.

Can someone let me know whether the roof is all one piece of bare chassis, or whether it is connected to a frame on both sides of the car above the windows, or whether there's just one piece of frame running through the middle of the roof?

God this question is hard to verbalise. Sorry if I sound like a complete moron. Feel free to reword the question so it makes more sense.

I think dstocks has pictures of inside the roof and at least some diagrams on the CompleFTO website, check there.

there is nothing on the top, otherwise the sunroof would be an option.

sunroof

Post by dstocks »

Certainly on the sunroof version, there is a subframe running up either side and front and rear. This is where the glue that rusts the roof in the pre-facelift models is a problem. In the sunroof version, there is another subframe around the sunroof itself.

Hope this helps...

How about a car without a sunroof?

Sorry like I said it's very hard to type what I'm actually asking. Maybe I can draw a pic? :( Hope this doesn't look too retarded!

    Image

Ok this is a retarded pic of the roof. What I'm asking is whether the roof has a frame marked out like the red? Or maybe has extra reinforcement in the middle like the blue? Or is it all just one piece acting as a frame?

    Definitely the red

    Post by dstocks »

Definitely the red and maybe also the blue. Havent taken a standard one apart. Might see if I can get a definitive answer to you on that one over the next day or 2 as I have one mostly disassembled I could have a look at

Well I'm actually just wondering whether the roof and I guess side/rearish panel are all one panel and can be removed. Once again I have failed the verbal automotive exam.

Well from what I can see there's no breaks in between the roof and side panel so I'm just wondering whether it's attached using bolts or is actually welded onto the frame......if there is a frame :?

But I think now we know......yay! Is that your final answer? All the red?

      OK

      Post by dstocks »

OK, without spending a half hour removing the lining, I can say that im 95% sure there is no bar (im afraid, no matter how nicely you ask sitting outside at 10:30 at night to get the extra 5% is not going to happen).

I shone a light down the side of the lining and across the back (there is no back window in the shell). From what I can see, there is no bar I can see.

That's cool man! I appreciate the feedback. Do you think that the whole roof and side panel are welded to the chassis frame? Or attached like the other panels on the vehicle?

the roof will be welded to the door pillars etc all the way round, thats why its called a "monoque chassis".

If you are thinking of making it into a convertable, forget it. You would need to add heaps of extra support around the door pillars etc. You might get away with some of it if you had a full roll cage.

A chain saw would be the way to go if you really want to take it off.

Money can't buy happiness, but it can help you look for it quicker, in a convertible.

Well Einstein.....why didn't you tell me that in the first place? I'm not a big fan of convertibles, this was more of a curiousity kinda question. That's all I needed to know, is the roof welded to the chassis or not.
