Stationary Tapping noise

Post by messy »

Hey guys, got a 5spd 98 gx aero series, after driving (but i dont think always) when i come to stationary (for example in my driveway) i can hear a rhythmic tapping noise from the engine.

Its possibly louder sometimes then other times.. i find that when i push the clutch in (neutral position) the tapping ceases and the car sounds perfect.

any ideas?

Worn clutch springs or something? I think bennoz brought this up. Or do you mean you have a 5spd tip because it's a 98?

Tappet noise should be more prevalent when the engines cold then when it's warm, and it should also be pretty bad when the clutch is in (ie. neutral)... you can't miss it if it's the tappets while idling.

Could be tappets... but could also be the springs in the clutch plate or shot push out bearing. Does the sound go away when your foot is on the clutch?

Well, its either going to be the throw out bearing or the plate springs. Either way, its box off & new clutch kit to stop it. Think around the $700 mark to have it fixed.

99% thorw out bearing as Ben has said...base don your desciption. Its annoying but not the end of the world.

some clutches will rattle..i.e. a twin plate...but I guess urs is a std one so i assume its the throw out..

Yeah ^ It aint that urgent. You'll know when it becomes urgent, tapping noise turns to crunching noise - thats bad.

It was booked in.. But I have lost my licence for 6 months so the car is sitting in the backyard under a tarp.. Which is wehre it'll probably stay for a couple of years i'd say.. Until I can be bothered getting rid of it..

I had it booked in at bridgestone and he guaranteed that in the worst case scenario, it would be no more than 1300. Only because they were unsure of the fto and labour costs..

But was putting a neew clutch kit in, throwout bearing, machining the flywheel etc etc..

Nah, cant give it some love at the moment. It's unregistered plus i'm unlicenced.

Got done driving it the other day with a warrant in my name too... Now my brothers got a lot of fines in his name lol  . I love looking the same

Anyone wanna buy it? Brand new re-spray like 2 months old. It's black with multi coloured glitter through it. 17's, new headlights, big stereo..
