Mivec Top End Rattle

If I have the car at idle and quickly blip the throttle I get a rattle which sounds like its coming from the top of the engine ?

Have now noticed that I get like a 'pinking' sound especialy when the engine is under load at lower revs ?

Can the timing have altered ? Or is is just the tappet adjustment ? (They are a little noisy)

what kind of octane fuel do you use?

Even if thats not the issue...u shoud be. You car would b knocking like crazy under load...

dont think there's going to be engine dmg (hope anyway lol), but apparently the ecu cant really handle low octane fuel.

been running my car on 98 since i got it (once on 95 by accident), then i put in some normal unleaded (91/92 not sure) cos i was broke, man should've heard my car... not pretty

yeah dude spend the extra buck for 98 octane or even 100 octane if available. Really does make a difference and you wont get that knocking anymore.

Thanks guys...

Stopped at a Mobil and a Caltex on the way home Mobile was only 95 and the Caltex said premium (The counter guys said it was 96) Can we get 98 in NZ ??

Put some 96 inas a temp

Yea, there's a few places that have 98...mostly BP's & a few Mobils (from what I can see), not sure bout Shell, Catlex or Gull here. I get mine from the Mobil store in Mt.Roskill only cos its on my way home from work & has an eftpos slot so I dont need to go to the counter.

Has anyone tried the Add-on-Octane-additives from Repco to take Octane to 100? if so, how does it feel compared to 98?

never tried it personally, but all the things i've read from ppl indicate it's a waste of $$, and just plain bs.

and r u serious that your good fuel is 96? 8O
lol thought it was bad enough that our "good fuel" is 98 :?

96 is still better than 91 so at least use that one. 8O

Makes a hell of a difference.......even with the 96..No more pinking and the morning rattle has gone..

Must be some 98 around Browns Bay..??

cool least u have sorted the issue.

Dont mess around with cheap fuel adds....most of them are crapm just kerosene.
