Here's a new one... shot diff!

Yep, just had the inevitable call from my mechanic... went in for a routine service, few other tid bits to look at, including a clunk I get when braking in reverse - rooted diff.

Its funny too...just as I start looking to buy lighweight wheels, it looks like my big heavy bling wheel may have aided with the diffs demise....coupled with more power than usual, worn planetary gears are about to go walking into the g/box... lucky it was checked.

So... anyone got a LSD for sale or even a stock diff that hasnt done many miles (and please have it checked before throwing your hand up... wont be happy with a "Yeah, she looks ok" from a non mechanic.)

Hesitantly puts hand up and sheepishly admits havent checked yet but have a low mileage engine and manual box (with stock diff - not LSD) complete atm........buggered if I know how to check it though. Actually dont even know which bit the diff is in a FWD

Thanks guys. Yeah leaning towards LSD at the moment, with the big swaybars I've got on atm, everytime I drive out of a driveway or down a steep corner on angle, she either single wheel spins & doesnt go anywhere or lifts the rear wheel!

I was very happy, when I figured out the new man box has lsd in it as well.
Many says FTO lsd is viscous, but I dont think so.
When the car was on axle stands, i turned the single wheel few times, the other wheel turns immediately, which makes me believe that it is a clutch type lsd.
Where as viscous LSD takes a little while to engage, due to oil catching up with the turning speed.

Yeah there are a few types available, viscous, clutch, cam & pawl type.

Dunno which I'll go for yet. Probably a softer type as most of its driving is done on road.

And to make matters worse.... the car my mechanic lent me....

is an R33

If its stock it would be like driving a boat compared to your FTO..a speed boat mind u with a 454 block

I think the Viscous type would be fine for road driving...I know most GTSTs have VLSDs...quite tough and runs well.

I just dont like the grippy feel with a mad diff and twin plate clutch...its annoying as..need to soften it as much as possible as u said

Its a stock non turbo GT.... wouldnt pull a greased stick out of a dogs arse & it handles like a dog on lino!

LOL anyway, yeah I've got a few leads on the viscous type now, just chasing them up.
