i think i know exactly what your talking about, but are you sure about the lack of power and steering or maybe it's just a mental thing cos u r already grinding your teeth from the noise.
anyways, if i remember correctly, it's something to do with the belt that drives your aircon?
...sry i got all excited when started typing this cos i was there when a friend fixed this problem on his car (nto a fto but same problem) and i was like yay i'm helping, then realised i've forgotten everything lol. sorry

There's potential for a thread about anything on FTO Australia
With the FTO the air con and P/s are off the same belt.
When u engage the air con clutch the tension changes... It might be too tight based on what u said cos if the p/s is ok until then, it only gets tigher with the ac on.
Usually a squeeling belt just needs to be replaced or tenstioned and the noise goes away. Normally its not so bad that it effects the p/s.
this is the noise i was talking abt on the cruise the other day Ben just as u turned off to go home. yea im sure abt the handling loss, not so much power loss, just.. the car's handling feels really funny.
anyway so what do i have to replace? a new air con compressor? any ideas on $$

Yep cause the air con compressor is a pulley on the same belt line as the power steering pump, if the air con pully starts to seize up it will effect everything else on that belt.
I replaced mine a coupla years back & it wasnt cheap. I ended up getting a second hand one from Bankstown City Spares @ Moorebank for about $250 (Mitsi will hit your for $900+ for a new one) then you'll need to get it to either an auto sparky or air con shop to have it fitted - as your air con lines will need to be drained & repressurized. Expect the whole operation to cost around 4-500.
