Limp mode plus other strange events.

Post by FTO430 »

Hi everyone, i have had a good read through the posts on auto gearboxes playing up etc, but mine is a bit different.

It started Yesterday, after i filled up with petrol. When i am completely stopped and go to accelerate (in first or 2nd gear) the gears seem to slip, and suddenly grab again at 2k+ rpm, which doesn't feel like it is doing the car any good.

Also, when im in 4th, and change down to 3rd or 2nd, it takes over 4 seconds to engage in that gear, it seams as though it is in neutral between gears. (i can floor it and the car wont accelerate just rev for a couple seconds until it engages)

When at stopped on a slope, if i release the breaks, the car will roll froward or backward as though in neutral. Finally, Today, It got stuck in 3rd gear with the flashing N going on. I was unable to change gears al all, stopped and all, remained in 3rd. Even when i turned off and restarted my car, it would do all that other stuff, then when i get to 3rd, stay in it.

What do you think?

Ok, i got the fault codes, but i have no idea what to do with them. N was flashing codes 42 and 43 and the orange gearbox light was flashing code 64. From fto dc wa site it says these codes mean Fuel Pump, EGR (not sure what this stands for, something gear ratio??) and Alternator FR terminal. I cant really see why my fuel pump and alternator can make my car feel like the gears are slipping though? and how these things can all go strange overnight? Am i wrong?

You dont have an orange gear box light. The gear box codes are taken from the "N" on the dash. Recheck to see what codes you get from there. Then go to http://www.ftooc.org/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=31351 and it will give you the interpretation.

Thanks for that, so the codes i am getting mean (42) 2nd gear ratio does not meet specification and (43) 3rd gear ratio does not meet specification. Do you think this is serious, major repairs involved? Because the car really isnt drivable how it is at the moment.

I'm going to assume you've checked the transmission fluid levels.

I had a similar problem after a change when not enough was put in and it caused slipage and all sorts of issues.

If it's low, top it up and disconnect the battery for ten minutes to clear the error code.
