A running preview of my blue leds

Post by dAsh »

Hi all, just thought I'd show you a quick look at my blue led project.
The centre pod guages are just sitting roughly in place at the moment, not held in by the pod surround.
I started this after work 2 days ago, and only get an hour or 2 each day to play.
Bear in mind I didnt set my camera up for night shots, so as a result you can see the shape of the leds through the screens (this cannot be seen by the eye and is a result of the camera not being set right)
In this shot they also look a bit 'patchy' this is also due to the camera, in reality the are full, even and much bluer than the camera suggests (one day I'll figure out the settings on that camera!)
Hoping to get some plain white dials with either blue or red numbers on them.
Also had a thought that maybe the aircon ecu may look nicer with a contrasting red led?
Any thoughts?

yeah, she's my own project, I saw someones pic on the web once and thought they looks the mutts nuts, so I got around to figuring out what I needed to do, I'll post some good pics when I've finished it up (hopefully on the weekend)
G1, just go to jaycars website and check out all the leds there, if enough people want, I'll post a 'how to' after I'm finished.
Unless you know a little about electronics, don't just go out and buy leds as you'll get a bit of a surprise when you try them on your lighting circuit and blow the shitter out of them ;)
You'll need resistors etc, and a nice steady soldering hand!.

Edit: Nice work jiba, what dials are they?

Which part of the centre console FTO?
I have 2 leds in the clock, 2 in the voltmeter, 4 in total in the aircon ecu, 2 general illum and 2 inside the actual ecu (which I changed tonight to red, and boy does it look fantastic!), one in the ciggy, one in the ash and by tomorrow night I should have changed the lighting on the tiptronic shift.
Cheers, Darren.

i did mine a couple of months ago but in red LED..
i used ZD1790 (20,000mcd's in brightness) LED available from jcars for 4$ each, this is their brightest LED but i dont know whether dAsh used a brighter one than 20,000 mcds... i think i used a 220ohm resistor/LED..
it looks okay, but i'd like it brighter... and i get an uneven level of brightness across the dash...
the centre console worked okay, its pretty bright, but the lcd panel for A/C, i get 2 bright spots directly where the LEDs are. dAsh do you know how i can fix this?
the lcd panel can be read at night, but very hard during the day because of the LED brightness..
i also stuffed up my clock in the process, i think i short circuited it and now its not working  but that was my fault offcourse..
