Where's The Heater Core?

Post by DRFTO »

Hey everyone, hows it going? Well my heater has just suddenly stopped working in the car(Which is bad luck since its been so cold in the nights..) but my aircon & fan levels seem to be functioning fine, sept when i turn on my aircon at the start..it blows out smelly air, then after a few seconds the smell is gone. I've had many suggestions what it could be like, there's a problem with the matrix, or a mechanical fault with the actuator that diverts hot air, or a loose pipe at the rear of the unit. But everyone always seem to say it could be my heater core that's stuffed up. So would anyone know where is this heater core located in the car? Or know where I can find one or get a part number? Or would anyone know a specialist or a place on where i could go to fix my heater problem? Cause I've heard that i might have to get my whole interior console taken out. I live in the northen suburbs in melbourne, near thomastown, reservoir etc. Thanks for your help everyone & take care. =)

Heater Core

Post by dstocks »

The heater core is under the dash. You could possibly get it out without removing the dash, but would be much easier with the dash removed. There are 2 black pipes going through the firewall (about 2cm in diameter). These feed directly into the heater core. I do have a spare one if you need it, but would be best if you confirmed that that is your problem first. If it not the core, I have all the other heater bits as well.

As to replacing it, if you dont mind having a shot at it, its not really that hard to replace, just takes a bit of time. I have done a guide to get the dash out on CompleteFTO

I have this exact issue. Small smell of the aircon gas but absolutlely no heat now. It only happened a couple of weeks ago and the weather hadn't bothered me enough to get it fixed. I'm gonna take it to my local mechanic soon and see what he says (he's awesome, don't doubt his skills) and if he finds the issue I'll report back here.

A sure sign the core is leaking is a moist passenger floor. Careful if you have a tip also as the ECU for the box can get water on it and cause other problems. Speaking from experience here.

How do I reload XP when it came with the computer and I have no disk, just a facility to return to a previous set up? Maybe then my CAPS will work

TBH Ben, I forgot about it as I couldn't get it working. I remember Jinksy (?) saying she had to reinstall her XP ut I dont have that option. One day I will try running it from the C drive and see if that makes any difference.
