Are you sure that its the alternator? When my alternator died I couldn't even start the car. The fact that you're able to get the battery charged at all seems like a good sign, I wouldn't think that any car would keep going if you disconnect the battery though..
If you've got another working battery handy, try that first & then if that doesn't fix the problem, start looking at the alternator.
If you're with the RACQ you can get them to come out to your house to look at it & go from there

Get a GR alternator.
The 4 pin alternator provides different levels of power, 1 for normal engine operation, 1 for mivec territory. Swapping the ECU wont help cause you'd need the rest of the mivec harness to connect it all....
Go & get your an auto elec to just reco the GR unit. Shouldn't cost you more than $300. Worse case scenario replace it. GR alternators are really simple units. Can be generically replaced & not neccessarily by a Nippon Denso unit.

Some cars will run with no battery attatched.. This includes FTOs (or at least mine will)
And Ben is right (as always) part of the GPX alternator is purely for running the MIVEC system. Aparently this is why my old engine died (something about altenator died while in mivec or something.. and everything seized up..
So im told...

If you need good deal on photography, let me know.
