Hey guys i'm a new user but have been checking this site out for awhile now

I'm after an FTO for hopefully under 7g so anyone with some offers or if you've seen one for sale on boost or carsales please let me know!

It'll be my first car and i really have my heart set on an FTO

(hopefully if a bullshit thread like the one that kid was doing saying "i want an fto fto for lifeeee!" can end up with him getting an fto then i gotta give it a shot lol)

any help would be great and especially offers!

First up, WTTC fella, you won't regret buying an FTO as long as you buy one in decent condition.

I love these cars so much, as I am sure most other members do too. I got my original Tip GPX and wasn't overly impressed (coming from a turbo vehicle) and had my heart set on an RX7. Needless to say, that all changed when I found this one.

If only you were in NZ, you could pick up a reasonable k's, '98 GPX for ~$7k. I am sure you can find something in Brissy too, just wave the $7k wad of cash in front of someones face and they will cave :):)

I can't find the link just now (on what to look out for when buying an FTO) but I will start off by saying look for bubbles on the roof, it is roof rust, and you need to run a mile.

Also, when test driving, wind the windows all the way down and listen for the window rattles, if you are handy with spanners etc, you can fix yourself. While this is by far a deal breaker, you can use it to drive the price down.

Make sure the air con works a treat too, that's a biggy.

Be weary of hard starting (could just be battery, but often times it is alternator or starter issues). Again, both easy to fix, drive that mo for price down :)

I die a little inside every time someone talks about buying or selling an FTO for less than 10 grand .. :(

.. best of luck with your search .. as Simon said, 'tis just a matter of timing .. Just be careful you don't get a lemon .. I've heard of people picking them up that cheap lately, but you get what you pay for in most cases.. just be prepared to have to spend a few grand or more to get it up to mustard & end up costing you more in the long run..

thanks for the replies guys, the things to look out for was amazingly helpful mate and very thoughtful, if thats what most people in this club are like i think i'm gonna love this site lol

i know buying one for under ten grand as you said will meen its only a shadow of what an fto can be but at 19, uni 4 days a week, working five nights a week in a crappy job, playing tennis comp, and goin to the gym a couple of hours a day its really the most i can afford at the moment and i really see it as my first step to getting a decent fto in the future

cool stuff.. I was 19 when I got mine as well .. working full time though & cost me $16,500 .. top notch condition though but I've still had to spend quite a bit to fix up stuff over the years.. suspension overhaul / major services etc .. replacing heaps of carp..

Will be good to see you along for cruises when you get one :)

I'll keep an eye out.. are you willing to look interstate?

for an fto? mate i'll go to victoria for the right one haha
ideally brisbane would be te best or the gold coast so i can inspect the car and all but nsw and maybe even vic wouldnt b 2 much of a problem. just rope the guys in for a roadtrip lol

Anyway, gl finding one under 7k in good condition. Hope you find what you're looking for - at least you can spell and don't go around yelling "YEA FTOZZ FOR LIFEZZ *westside*" :lol:

If you can do some work yourself when buying cars, there are genuine bargains to be had. If you don't know your ass from your elbow with cars, buy a minter! Still can have issues with any car though. It's better to know your stuff first :)

Totally agree, i have seen heaps of people buy "Minters" only to have heaps of problems with them. You need to judge each car on its own merits

And if you can DIY some stuff (let's face it, plenty of people to give advice and instructions here) and are generally handy with tools (read: a technical mind) then you can save yourself a shitload off the purchase price of a car by getting a not perfect car...

Besides, you will probably modify it anyways, may as well not start with something pristine!

My advice, if you want it: Try to find one that is mechanically A1 (or close to it) with a rough body (no rust though) then buy a nice kit and give it a respray. Best way to start out me thinks!

by the time you respray it and fit a kit (providing you pay 7k) your up for 10-12 grand anyway...

**shakes head** HE"S NOT SAYING 7K FOR THE RESPRAY. He is saying 7k for the car plus anywhere in between 3-5K for the spray = 10-12K :roll:

If he was buying an FTO and planning to buy a kit AS WELL, what point is there to get a mint condition one if he is going to throw the standard parts and fit an aftermarket kit?

Drive the price of a sh*tty looking one down so you have the cash to do what you want to actually do with it

Makes a weird kind of sense to me haha

Makes perfect logical sense FTO Evo..

It does work both ways though.. if there is a car that has been done up to showroom quality .. e.g. nice body kit, full custom respray, interior work done etc..

Then as long as you love the way the car looks, then I would say its worth spending another 5k on fixing up the mechanical probs..

The only problem with buying an already stylised car is not having that sense of the car being an extension of your personality .. it's somebody elses personality.. although it might look good, it might not be the same thing you would do with the car if you were given the chance.

that is the main reason I would give to back up the argument of starting from good mechanical base & working your way up from there with the styling mods.. Which is what I'm doing with the new car.. all the performance work I could have possibly have wanted to do with my other FTO has already been done .. so I can concentrate on customising it the way I want to..
