Touch up paint

I've got a massive Key mark on my door and 2 small stone chips which have a small rust spot in the middle.

I spoke to the car detailing people and they told me if I remove the rust, get paint and "build it up" over a few days, he can fix it up so it's not noticeable.

Q:
- How do I get rid of the rust?
- How exactly do I make sure I "build it up" right? Obviously for the small stone chips, I'm just going to dab at them with the paint and it'll probably create a little blob which will harden up etc, not too sure how I'm meant to do this.
- On the looong ass Key scratch, when I put paint over it, it's going to go outside the scratch and go on my existing paint.. is this safe? As in, is it going to look obviously touched up even when buffed? Do I just get a tiny art brush and use that to paint?

hey sub, im doin sprayin apprentice at a workshop now, from what i know, touch up, is no good at all, unless its like perfect paint match, even for stone chips an small marks, touch up is visible, so imagine a long ass scratch, best option is to sand it down, just where the scratch section an paint it again, by blending the paint. But if u cant be bothered, u can just touch up, u can only cover it up.

Thanks eddiii, I've been looking around (yes, I should've googled it before posting), found some good info. I'm going to be getting very thin brushes, break a few strands off and very carefully do hairline thin touch up to the scratches, maybe even using a toothpick so I apply it thin and lightly, then touch up clearcoat. I won't be getting any of the touch up on my existing paint, will be colour matching as I definitely don't want to be respraying whole panels or the car itself.

I should be good hopefully, if I f*ck it up, then I'll just take it to someone and get it done your way, nothing lost

i have some very thin (similar to toothpick) but for touch up at work, i can get it for u if u want, or u can try with toothpick

If you do f**k up,just get a rag and soak it in a bit of paint thinner then wipe it off whilst the paint is still wet.

Anywho, I just spoke to some dude on the phone for 15 mins, I think I'm just going to take it in rather than attempting it myself, because there's a few small scratches and chips on a few different places, he can just fix them all up for me, also repair the fibreglass sideskirt + detail the whole car all in one go, probably the better option.

I would've taken you up on it, but this time considering what needs to be done, will get a professional to do it. From here on, will fix anything minor as it comes up without delays!

I wouldn't be putting a rag of paint thinner my good paint thats for sure dude!

it wont damage 2 pac paint but i am not sure about acrylic.

acrylic is still fine as long as its not new paint an not FULLY RUBBING it hard

I was told $218 to get rid of the scratches and 3 rusted stone chips and all the other tiny little chips in various places where u can see primer. Detailing + paint protection is an extra 350, sideskirts if repaired and repainted, at most thats another 260.
Naw hasnt started, waiting till payday on Tuesday :/

Actually eddiii, since you're working in the industry, if I take pics of what I need fixed, can you give me an idea if it's something that can be successfully fixed without respraying the whole panel?

http://www.touchuppaints.com.au/ - I was going to take it into these guys after speaking to the guy there. On their website they have a lot of DIY kits for removing rust from metal, kits for any sort of not major damage, so I assume they'll be good at fixing more than just light scratches. I haven't actually showed him the car yet, need to take it in this weekend just to show him, not get anything done just yet - But let me know if you can give me a decent idea if I post up pics.

Edit: Ok, just went to http://www.touchupguys.com.au/ in castle hill, showed him what needed to be done, he quoted me $250 for the detailing, which includes getting rid of the rust stone chips (not on roof so just surface rust, but they'll check and stop it spreading, very small spots anyway), get rid of scratches where you can see a bit of the primer too. For the sideskirts to repair and repaint, he said $200. So $450 total instead of the douche that wanted to charge me $850.

well 450 sounds like a fair price, but i probably need to see it depends on how big everything is.
