Overheating :((
I have a "96 FTO GPX MIVEC, ive had thermostat, water pump, all hoses, radiator cap replaced at mitsubishi and i must add they are starting to get on my nerves, the car will drive for a bit then it will go from a quarter to half and if i flog it it'll go up to 3/4 on the temp gauge, the aircon makes it stay lower but sometimes it can be a bit cold.. i took it back to them and they thought maybe there was air in the cooling systems, they got it out and it still runs the same... what else can i do ?

Re: Overheating :((
Did you check the coolant levels?
Aircon keeps your cabin cool, not your engine and if anything it would push the temp higher.

Yeah, they're using Mitsubishi coolant, have you heard of other coolant that i could try personally to give it the best result? I've checked under the oil cap for any milky substances for potentional head gasket, having the air con on according to the temp gauges is keeping it cooler...

I would say there is still air in the system. It can be very tricky at times to get it all out. Either that or you have a block somewhere. Have they flow tested, pressure, tested the system?

Run your car for aprox 10-15 mins with the heater on full ( your best not to be in the car for this ) and check to see how low the coolant gets. This should get any air out of the system.

On the other hand wouldn't hurt to check the heater core inside, may have a leak...
Mitsu wouldn't have pressure tested it, unless they were having an overheating problem after they re filled it once all the work was done, probably didn't even road test it on the high way...

na either thermostat is faulty or you have heater core by-passed previously. Also are your thermo fans working?

The fans are running, and the thermostat has been replaced and when it was replaced two weeks ago it looked like nobody had replaced in ages according to Mitsubishi...

Re: Overheating :((
Now Mitsubishi are saying its either a faulty thermostat or because i have inadequate air flow, I have a mesh and i clean it all the time, its gets to three quarters on temp gauge when over 6k and highway cruising on hot days?

Re: Overheating :((
Are both fans coming on? And what temperature are they coming on? Im leaning towards either 1 dead fan, or if thats not the case, then a faulty ECU engine temp sensor in the block.... Not the one that controls the gauge, but the sender that tells the ECU what the temp is & when to turn the fans on.
What a bunch of tools.
The car is supposed to be able to sit & idle all day... not moving.... and not overheat.
Im not surprised you've spent a fortune, do yourself a favour & get it away from Mitsubishi. Go find a real mechanic.
Thats some super diagnostic work there. Did you tell them they are fuckwits? As in Mitsubishi released a car from the factory with "inadequate air flow" did they... gee their testing wasn't very thorough now was it!bray wrote:because i have inadequate air flow

1up! Yeah it doesn't seem as if they had taken much time to look at it. To Mitsubishi FTO's LEGNUM's and GTO's are either sh*t cars, or too hard for them to work on. I should know, since i worked across the road from them and got flak about ordering parts for the FTO and GTO...! Idiots.

That's always a good sign when the mechanic is a racer as well
Good luck with fixing it

Re: Overheating :((
Turns out it is one of the fans, when i rev over about 5rpm one of the fans will just shut off, then it will come back on, i have to have the aircon on for the car not to overheat.. should this problem cost much to fix?? Cheers i'm still booked in for the 19th

Re: Overheating :((
Nope you can get a brand new one for $50-$100 (although make sure you get one that fits) or a second hand one from an FTO for about $50.
If you get the second hand one you can DIY yourself, it's a straightforward replacement.
(I had the same issue a few months back)
