FTO 6a12 coffee table project started, Pics!@!@!@!

Hey i have got a f*cked FTO motor and now i can start making my coffee table(thanks ''kermut'')
My plans are not 'set in concrete' but they are something along the lines of

1. strip engine down to block and keep 4 pistons+conrods(engine has no sump but will be on small blocks off wood when complete.
2. get block sandblasted or spend ages with sandpaper and/or buff cleaning block and pistons
3. drill and tap threads into top of block so conrods can be bolted to block.
4. maybe powdercoat everythihng but prob not, maybe get the block bathed in chrome or get hammercoat chrome paint but prob not for pistons and conrods
5. buy some smoked glass or get a 2nd hand table with nice glass and depending on the weight of the glass put felt or suctioncups between pistons and glass

feel free to offer any ideas as im still open to suggestions (i know chrome might not be everyone's choice but i think the smoked will be a good contrast with it and the engine is meant to be seen so im not painting it dark colour like black)

Sure you want to keep the pistons though?
I actually have an Astron coffee table, and the only thing of it is the block itself, it already weighs a butt load.

Depending how you place the glass on to the block, I'd spend a couple of dollars at spotlight and get the little circular rubber feet and place them at intervals where the glass meets the metal.


One thing I've never gotten around to doing is my Magna back seat mini couch... one day.

yeah im expecting 40-60kgs at the end but will have a better idea at the end of the day when i have stripped most of the engine. it would be to low without the pistons i think. i will mount the pistons like the guy in the first link did

Yes i will get something like that for the top of the pistons. block weighs 42kg and 4 pistons weigh 2-3kg. going to try and get castor wheels for bottom (using the threads where the sump bolts used to go.so its a bit higher which will prob be 48cms but im happy if its between 38-48cms high. will try and remove the studs from the conrods so i can replace them with bolts and tap threads into the block or weld them there if i have to.

have booked it in to get sandblasted mid next week but am taking it in 2moro. still happy to paint it chrome probably with some hammercoat and put some lightly smoked glass on top. being that all the crank and everything is out it looks really hollow so i may make an aliminium plate for the bottom and maybe even put in lights.

Ok block is clean and have tapped threads in the head for the allen key headed bolts because i couldent use the shafts with threads that were in it as i wouldent be able to tighten them.

its going to be ready mid next week from the sandblasters that i took it too and it will be $50-$100 but he isnt going to sandblast the boars. yeah that piston is like that coz well its not really much of a piston anymore as seen in the last of those pics i put up lol

It's not aligned because in the last pic you can tell it's in pieces so it wasn't actually connected to the conrod.

Was the engine MIVEC or not?
And how much did it set you back?

I've thought of doing this, but ideally it'd be a V8 and an aluminum block at that (lighter + would look better)

hopefully i can get castor wheels with the same thread as the thread in the sump bolt threads so the its that bit higher and i can wheel it

yeah it is but it will be cooler soon.
not sure if it is mivec or not but im pretty sure the engine blocks are the same.
yeah v8's have been done a lot and when i look at most american v8 i just think they are substituting a good efficiently designed engine for a large displacement engine but when u look at a FTO engine and u got 6 cylinders in a v configureation with only a 2litre displacement its pretty cool especially when the most powerfull Non rotary mass produced NA engine 2l or under is a Honda series 2000 engine (k) that only has 4 cylinders...... something different and if your gonna use iron block u dont really wanna go more then 2-3l anyway or it will be to heavy.

engine was free but 1 of the pistons mustave got clostraphobic and decided to visit 2 of the other boars and ultimatly the air outside the crankcase (hole the size of 2* 20c coins)

O yeah and im going to use the camshaft with the cam gear on it as a toilet roll holder (not the 1 attatched to the wall) but ill clean it all up first, look in the pic of everything scattered in the yard to find it (its a bit like wheres wally lol)

IMO the s2000 motor is a joke. You pay 70k for a Honda and you get a 2.0l 4 cylinder motor???? Might seem special but then is has to be for the price you pay!

Then while driving the car you notice you only get the max claimed power in the last 200rpm and you have trouble overtaking a corolla on the freeway because that corolla next to you has the same torque levels as your 70k 4 cylinder beast.

Modern 4 cylinders rely on less rpm more capacity and forced induction which means more usable power and will whip a s2000 motor any day of the week.

Another great example is the rotary in the rx8.

yeah thanks, ive heard you have to change the oil heaps like every 10,000kms on the rx8's but still an interesting car and the motors are so tiny.

looking for glass now, gonna see a glazier or whatever they are called on monday and see what i can get made up but im also looking at 2nd hand a new coffee tables just to take the glass off as ive heard to get something made will be $150-$250 and places like fantastic furniture have a table thats just over the size i want for $70 and its total black which i dont want.

would love idea's of where i could get glass cheap that looks good; really looking for something slightly smoked with beveled edges with dimensions between 43-53cm for one side and 60-83cm for the other side and at least 3mm thick but 4-6mm would be best

have purchased castor wheels rated at 30kgs each(for 4) but have 6(45kgs) and they will be able to hold more especially being that the motor will be stationary most of the time

Nice! Mate if I were you, I'd get the whole friggen assembly chromed. Just take the lot down to your local electro plater, get 'em to acid dip it all, then dump it in the chrome tank

i thought it was non mivec because the manifold pipe diamater looked smaller (think mivec is 2.25'' and non is 2'') how else can you tell? the piston tops or somthing?

how much do you think acid dipping would cost and how much for a chrome bath bennoz?

You can tell by the cams. See each cam lobe has one valve to itself. Mivecs have one (2 part) rocker arm per 2 valves. Plus a whole bunch of other kit in the rocker assemblies.

I dunno, chrome plating isn't expensive thou, I had every bolt from the windscreen wipers to the bumper bar (including engine bolts) done for my old mini & its cost me 50 bucks. I dont reckon you'd pay anymore than a hundred or so.
