Gearbox Problem :(

Post by Shhtuart »

I was driving my car today and when it accelerates from 1>2>3 it loses all power in the gearbox when changing gears up and down. It feels like it can't select a gear but when I put it into tip mode I can change up gears fine.

When I'm accelerating it feels juttery when it loses power but all the electrics work and everything is on.

If i'm in 5th and it downshifts into 3rd or 4th it loses power until i ease off the pedal and the revs slowly build.

I checked the oil and it smells slightly burnt. Can cooked oil in the box prevent it from selecting gears properly? I'm quite worried :(

Did it start all of a sudden or has gradually gotten worse?

It had done it twice before, both when turning a sweeping bend from 50kmh to 100kmh merging into a freeway. I put my foot down and it went from 5th to 3rd and lost all power. I found it odd but didn't stress too much.

It sounds like a flat spot in the throttle, but the gear changes through a spanner into the mix on that :? . Is it only under hard throttle?

I'm pretty sure the oil is cooked. I let it cool down and took it out then and I didn't notice it.

The temperature hit 31 in Melbourne today, that could be why it's playing up. It was hot nights last time it did it too.

I'll be flushing the fluid out tomorrow hopefully. The LSD 5spd Tip will use the same Dextron III as the non LSD type yes??

It was gentle throttle too. Didn't matter if I red lined it or grannied it.

It seems to only do it when the gearbox is hot. I pull over when it does it and let it cool down and it goes back to normal.

Haha, I just did that and it fell out :P

Nah, a gentle touch is needed for a sick gearbox. So can anyone confirm the 5spd Tip LSD box takes Dextron III?

OK well I've just changed the transmission fluid + filter and took it out. It literally drove like a dream, the gear changes were so smooth and shorter but after 15 mins of driving it did the exact same thing.

I'm so sad right now, anyone have any ideas excluding bad fluid as into what it could be.

Keeping in mind;

It doesn't do it when cold, only when hot.
It gets to the rev range to change up gears and it loses power, sort of like when you bunny hop a manual.
It hits MIVEC when its not playing up.

I took a video of me driving when it happens. Keep in mind the first one is gentle, with constant pressure on the pedal. The revs look like im pushing up and down on the pedal but im not. The second part I literally have my foot planted on the floor.

This one is the error codes. I'm aware of the ABS warning as there's no ABS ring on the drivers side driveshaft and the SRS has been there since they changed the driveshaft, I suspect they might have knocked the sensor.

What does it do when you put it in neutral and just put foot to floor? does it struggle to climb revs?
