Re: Aluminium supplies - where from?
Been phoning round all afternoon and can't find anywhere that sells aluminium rectangular tube/box section in the size I want which is 76mm x 63mm x up to 1 metre, length isn't a problem just the box size, only seem to be up to 50mm x 50mm or 76mm x 25mm.
If I could get 76mm x 76mm then that would do but can't even get that.
I've tried Capral and they do 3 metre lengths but only 76 x 25.
I can get it from the UK but delivery will be expensive and it's just crazy, where am I going wrong, there must be some suppliers out there.
Tried Stratco, Bunnings, Darley, local hardware stores, supposed aluminium suppliers here in WA but nothing, most of them say try Capral.

I know nothing about metal n stuff so this is probably going to be a nub question. Would it be cheaper and quicker than getting something posted to you than to weld 2 sheets together?

Re: Aluminium supplies - where from?
I see what you mean but what i'm planning is a bit more complex, I can achieve a lot of what I want by cutting box section and this will save a lot of welding which is what i'm trying to achieve (will still be a lot of welding though - well brazing).Taz wrote:I know nothing about metal n stuff so this is probably going to be a nub question. I'm after making my own air/liquid charge cooler integrated with the standard (but cut down) fto intake plenum.
If I can get box section 76mm x 76mm x 300mm
a -----------------------------b
| |
c -----------------------------d
a to c = 76mm
a to b = 300mm
And cut diagonally between c and b to end up with a 3D triangle that has 3 faces already and weld that to my liquid/air core to make one end tank.
I won't be going exactly corner to corner as I don't have the room for an angle like that so the height of the slope will be at max 1 inch.
The cut will really be from just above c to just below b, this will also give me some left over box section i.e the other half.
With this left over i'm going to cut across from above c (1/2 inch) to above d (1/2 inch) to effectively make some ally channel that will be 76mm x 12.5mm x 300mm
This is what will be welded to the other side of the charge cooler core so that it stands off from the core a little and then that will have 6 holes cut into it and welded to my cut down intake plenum.
I'm going to do all the work myself.
Really looking forward to this part of the project even if it doesn't turn out quite right first time.
Sorry about the diagrams, it's clearer in my head.

Talk to their special order desk, they might be able to help, (unlikely it is Bunnings! Lol, but worth a try)

Couple of other places you could try. First stop would be Blackwoods. They deal with most metal suppliers & have retail outlets.
Blackwoods are like the one stop shop for all industry needs. They sell f**king everything, so be prepared to browse their phonebook-esque catalogue for a while

Hmm, nothing on their website although they do have quite a bit of angle. Think I will give them a call instead.
