time for new tyres
Almost totaled my fto on sunday night. my car decided it didn't want to turn but thought it will be better to go straight around the bend. I hit one of those plastic reflector poles at about 55kmh and just the wall. result :
Ugly dent on my bonnet and scratches on my front bumper.
Damage on pole:
Absalutly nothing. even re erected itself up
lesson learnt. slow down on turns when the road is wet

so whenevr the road is wet i basically do a turn under 20km/h

FTO sub frame are built like brick s**thouse, that for sure
fun car to drive in the rain but with wide tyres water takes longer to disperse, better chance of aquaplaning. I share ya pain

Think you'll get a very different opinion from a panel beater that's had to repair a few. They fold quicker than Superman on laundry day, then refuse the come back to shape when jigged.BearOnFire wrote:FTO sub frame are built like brick s**thouse, that for sure

No structural damage on my wreck, well apart from the rust on the roof pillars
FTO had more advance chassis construction than the GTO? Remembered reading about it on the older thread.

Re: time for new tyres
You don't need new tyres, I have the perfect solution for you.
Step 1: Go to a Police Station.
Step 2: Surrender your driver's license as you clearly don't know how to drive or understand how a wet surface affects your grip, breaking and acceleration.
Step 3: Save the money that you would have spent on tyres as you no longer need to drive.
In short, the lesson that you should have learnt is don't drive like a f#ckwit or else you will damage your car, potentially hurt yourself or even worse others.

Iv even aquaplaned at <10km/hr and went straight instead of around a round-a-bout. (luckily stopped before going off the road).
Needless to say that was when I learnt my lesson about tires and within a week put fk452s all around, now I could hit the same round-a-bout at >30 in the wet and it hugs so well. (not saying I'm crazy in the rain), just saying sometimes it is tires.

I've aquaplaned 40km/h over a large puddle on a 60km/h corner.

I just got these on my Mazda 3.shadowarrior wrote:michelin pilot sports 3......enough said.
Haven't tested grip yet but they roll so smoothly and are pretty quiet. The standard bridgestones had lots of grip when new but were noisy and didn't roll smooth. Hoping the PS3 will at least match the grip, but of what I read they are good.
If you want some extremely high gripping tires for both wet and dry, get the Toyo R1R

Yehp! But now the rear has to be matched, at least grip wise.... Right now, i am prone to tailouts and oversteers o_obass_twitch wrote:they are, I'm really impressed with themGholdwayne wrote:I thought the FK452's are pretty good wet n dry for road use!

i was doing 5kmh under the speed limit. what made me lose control is the mud on the side of the road i went over after aqua sliding

Re: time for new tyres
I reckon you still should have slown down.. doing 55 in a 60 is fine if you're criusing.. if you take a corner, in the wet, then 5 k's under or 10ks under, it doesnt matter!hhakan wrote:i was doing 5kmh under the speed limit. what made me lose control is the mud on the side of the road i went over after aqua sliding
The only time i would take on a corner/roundabout in the wet at those 5/10k under speed would be if it was a low risk situation, eg. No cars and pleee enty of room for error so if something happens, nothing happens

Now go get some good tyres and dont be cheap about them, especially when you will drive faster than an average conservative driver...

Re: time for new tyres
I almost died 5 years ago because someone was careless when overtaking me, and ran into a car already overtaking causing a three car accident in a 110 zone with cars that were travelling at around 140km/h (not me I was doing the speed limit). Whilst it was the best roller coaster ride of my life being in a car that is sliding back and forth across the road and coming within a foot of dropping off into a concrete culvert whilst it was still sliding sideways at 100km/h, I'd rather it not happen again to myself or others. The only reason why I'm still alive is because I was paying attention to the cars around me, saw what was about to happen in my rear view mirror, thought "titty f#cking Christ!" and was ready for the impact when it occurred.
Getting better tyres does not help that the OP should have:
Avoided the mud puddle if he was travelling at higher than normal speeds.
Slowed down more for a corner in the wet then in the dry.
Thinking that just getting better tyres will suddenly make the same or similar situation not occur again in the future is very silly.
Spirited driving is fine, I have no problem with that, but care should be given to other traffic and above all current road conditions. You don't drive at 100km/h if you can't see due to fog or rain even if that is the signed speed limit. You don't drive too fast on a road covered in potholes in case you hit one and go out of control. And by the same token, you don't take the same corner at high speed when you know you will have significantly less grip due to current or even recent rain.
I've aquaplaned before, but I did so knowing that I was going straight, it was a small puddle, and there was not oncoming traffic. Doing so whilst going around a corner shows that the driver has no idea about what they where getting themselves into. Anyone who has hit a puddle at speed (and I don't doubt that everyone on this forum has at least once) should know what effect it has on your car, the sudden loss of traction from that wheel, the drag caused pulling your car in the direction of the affected tyre, the jump in the steering wheel caused by the sudden forces affecting your steering. You know what it does when going straight so you know that when going around a corner where the weight is loaded up on one tyre that if you hit a puddle, you're going to slide.
OP, your accident was caused by stupidity and/or ignorance. Neither of which is acceptable when driving on a public road because as I pointed out at the beginning of my post, you can hurt other people quite easily when you fail to pay proper attention and take care of what you are doing. Also kids, do your f#cking shoulder checks before overtaking!
Now get off my lawn!
