It's 90A compared to the other cheap ones at 75A. And a bonus is its not far from where I live :)

Is it worth replacing the alternator belt at the same time? Also I see the struts need to come off to gain access.

Any ideas on how to get the strut bolts off? Don't have a rattle gun and last time I tried I couldn't get them off (even with a soaking of WD40).

Alternatively I'd be extremely grateful if I could use Paya's garage :P

According to the DIY's the struts will need to be moved in order for the alternator to come out. Apparently the best way to do it is to get it through the drivers side wheel arch.

Is there a better way?

You should download the workshop manual.......
I believe you can take it out from underneath but this is how the manual states to do it........

Yeah I have the manuals already, I never read through it properly to see the procedures of removing items haha. This should be a lot easier :)

Sorry a few more questions, what's the proper procedure of releasing the tension of the alternator belt? And do I need a torque wrench to do it up for the right tension? Also, do I need to disconnect the battery before disconnecting reconnecting it? (my stupid alarm goes off when the battery is disconnected, I'm tempted to just take the backup battery out of it).

Disconnect the negative battery terminal (and move it away from the battery), this is a must (does your alarm have a key to turn off battery backup, the lock would be on the siren box under the bonnet)
To release the tension you have to loosen the nut in the middle of the tension pulley and then rotate the tension adjust bolt above the pulley, this will allow the pulley to move down, releasing the tension until it's loose enough to remove the belt (you can see the pulley in the picture I gave, it has a channel for the pulley to move up and down)
To do it back up just do reverse of above until you can pushed on the belt, inbetween pulleys, and it only moves approx 10mm (you manual will give the exact movement), make sure you do up the nut in the middle of the pulley quite hard.
You might find it hard to get a tool to the pulley nut, just experiment, I hold a socket in the grips of a large set of vice grips ( I have grinded a slot out of the socket for the grips to hold on to, or else the grips slip around the socket)

Just feel the tension of the belt before you take it off. Or push down 10kgs worth of load on the longest span of belt between pulleys and it should not go down more than a cm.

Cost me $80 labour to get the alternator changed. I asked for a fixed price, so the auto elec looked at it and quoted me $80 or an hour to change over. Picked up car and they told me it took a lot longer!!!

Con an auto elec i say!

Cant you remove the alternator by dropping the drive shaft?

Remove, hub nut, hub at lower ball joint, drop the shaft and remove the alternator?

Yes. There's a place in SA that advertises on eBay and I gave them a call as they only show the 2pin one, but they need the part number for the 4pinto check if they have it.

I got mine from a place in Castle Hill called Elite Auto Spares. If you tell them you have an FTO and that you are after a 4 pin alternator they should be able to help. Walid is the one to talk to.
