Fixing my downshifting problem...

okay so I took my car to the mechanic in town that everyone says to go to, to get my gear selector bracket installed and the guy i spoke to was a f*cking w*nker... I got the impression from him that he really didn't want to touch the car because it was an import blah blah blah. And then he was saying something that it might not even be the problem and it might be something else... but basically I am left nowhere.

So I was wanting to do the work myself and I need some help from someone that has changed one of these before.

Okay so far I've removed the battery, tray and the bracket that the battery sits on. Also removed the pins that hold the cables to the box and the bolts that hold the actual selector bracket in place. Pulled the bracket out and had a look, it's farked, welds on both sides + it's not even aligned properly.



And here's a pic of the new bracket.



So yeah, HELP anyone? PLEASE

-__- or maybe I haven't explained myself properly... How the hell do you get the cables out of the old bracket and into the new one? like they don't just slide out?

Pull the clip out, there is one on each cable.
Then slide the cable back toward the firewall, and the bracket toward the radiator.

The cables will then come out.

Edit: attached, pair of pliers pulls them out.

Bolt the fked bracket back to the gearbox (trust me, this is the only way you'll do it) then using multi grips, yanks off spring clips that go around the cable in the bracket. They have a flat steel section just above the cable, get a hold of it & yank as hard as you can. They're tight bastards.

It's similar to the one that holds the break fluid tubes in around the rotors, we had to remove them last weekend, just douse them in WD40/CRC etc, that what we had to do.

Yep, a bit of lube makes tight things move.

I found that if you can hammer in a tiny flat head in between the bracket and the clip (not too hard, just enough to get it in) and then twist the flat head slightly - just enough to separate the clip from the bracket - then try removing it again, it should be much easier.
And yes, as always a bit of lube like WD40 will help too.

Yeah I tried hammering a flat head in and it was still hard... Also now I think I need to put all this sh*t back together to drive down to Supercheap and pick me up some lube... -__-

Got the top one finally off! Now the bottom one, which looks even harder to get at...

Okay the new bracket is finally on! Yet to go for a test drive but I'm confident that it will be all good... Here's some pics of my old (FCUKED) bracket...



And look at the welds LOL and it wasn't even straight...

Just went for a drive... A bit easier to get into gear but still not the way it should be... With the bracket eliminated from why the problem is occurring what would it be? The shifter itself? ......

When was the last time you changed the g/box oil?

Possibly the selector cables as well?

Gearbox oil... I couldn't tell you as I haven't touched that since buying the car a couple months ago... cables yeahh but it gets into every other gear okay, the main problem I'm trying to eliminate is the downshifting from 3rd to 2nd, it's always a little b*tch to put into gear...

I would say do the cheapest alternative and change the box oil - this is one of the most neglected things on an FTO, and causes a fair bit of problems if left for a long time. It probably needs a good change anyway, regardless if it fixes the problem.
