Re: Love my tappets
HELP.........
Vectose and I are trying to get all parts ready for saturdays big top end/timing belt rebuild.
The first diagram shows half moon seals on the timing belt end of the cam shaft holders.......
The second pic shows them on the gearbox side.
Are they on both ends?
As camskill quotes there are only 2 sets per engine, not 4 sets.

Re: Love my tappets
Heading up to Newcastle today to help Vectose change timing belt and water pump. Also stripping the top of the engine to clean out hydraulic tappets and clean the grime from upper engine components.
I have packed two boxes of tools to compliment Vectoses' tools and my camera and Galaxy tablet.
Being payed with KFC lunch
All welcome to come and see the "Master Tappet Adjuster" in action.

Re: Love my tappets
Timing belt, water pump, pulleys and rocker cover gaskets were changed.
We removed and cleaned out all of the hydraulic tappets, the single tappet noise is still there but has now moved from the rear bank to the front bank, and since we did not put the hydraulic tappets back in the same places we're thinking one of the hydraulic tappets is stuffed and needs replacing.
I only got 3 hours sleep, so Phil can tell you the rest.

Re: Love my tappets
Another job well done and another night of jokes, fun and mechanics.
Got home @ 5am
Started @ 10am > Finished @ 4am = 18 hours
KFC for lunch @ 5pm Dominos for dinner @ 1am
As stated timing belt, water pump, idler pulley, tension pulley, rocker cover gaskets and spark plug seals all changed.
We serviced the hydraulic tappets. We removed all cam caps, although only one at a time, removed the hydraulic tappets and replaced the cam caps, left tappets to soak in engine flush/petrol mix for 6 hours, then soak in oil for one hour. We then re-removed cam caps one at a time and re-inserted tappets, re-installed and tensioned cam caps. We installed the tappets into different positions and in doing so moved the single tappet noise from the rear bank #3 cylinder to the front bank # 6 cylinder. So Vectose needs to replace this tappet and said noise should cease
One of the cams was out of time by one tooth before we removed the timing belt
We installed the new belt with all cams in time = more horsepower and a smoother idle. Vectose went for a neighbourhood spirited run @ 3:30am and returned with a big smile on his face and thumbs up
One phone call each to Bennoz and ZFL45H1 for advice, thanks guys
Note: If anyone else is thinking about asking me to do their tappets, I would wait a while before asking
Some more pics........

Re: Love my tappets
So did you get the belt tensioned to specs? Seems the position on the tensioner pulley needs at least another quarter of a turn?
The hydraulic lifter has been done to death. I've done the whole cleaning thing and on my third set of hydraulic lifters. The whole cleaning lifter thing is absolute garbage. Look it does work for a few thousand kms but the noise always returns after a while.
People always say "my lifters were jammed and cleaning it unjammed it". The thing is the whole point of a lash adjuster is just that, to eliminate lash. A stiff lifter that has no play on the piston is a good lifter. If the lifter is full of oil and you still can push the piston down the lifter is bad, and no matter how much cleaning or bleeding will fix the lifter.
The only solution is to change the lifter. I've cleaned lifters twice and noise returns quicker the most you do it. Even with new lifters the noise returns after a couple of years. Best thing to do is regular oil changes!
The front bank of lifters always start to tick first. Why? Check out your PCV this causes the front bank to always sludge up quicker than the rear bank.
