1.8L FTO

A mechanic at my work wants to buy his 17 year old son his first car. He doesn't want his son to own a commonhoar. He likes the FTO, after seeing mine and hearing that the parts for them are quite easy to access.
On the weekend he found a 4 cyl 1.8L FTO and has asked me for advice on whether he should consider purchasing it. I don't know much about the 1.8L.
Is it a good FTO version?
Can you find parts for it, just as easy as the 2L?
Should he just be looking for a 2L MIVEC or Non-MIVEC?

From memory it's the same engine as what's in a lancer, so parts shouldn't be any harder to source than they currently are.

The 1.8 is the base model, so won't have some of the creature comforts of the 2.0's. That being said, the 1.8 won't go anywhere near as fast as a 2.0, so is probably safer for him in that regard as well.

Less power, smaller brakes, 4g93, different chassis code (DE2A).

Only benefits I can think of is that the engine is shared with the Lancer and Mirage so sourcing parts for it (engine) would be a breeze.

I'd go a GPX if anything.

Yup. GS model. Hard to find in Aus, dont think Ive ever seen one pop up for sale or even heard of one in aus until this post. As mentioned, base model. Dont think they have foldable mirrors, climate control etc. but could be wrong. Edit - Non-foldable mirrors but does have climate control.

Does something like 92kw at the fly, at 6,000rpm. Also single overhead camshaft as opposed to DOHC that we have.

Meh, I say. May as well just go for a higher end model in my opinion. Non MIVEC if its really that big of an issue. But driving a GS would be like driving a mirage. As said, 4G93 engine.

I think it'd be good for the kid, especially if he's in a place that's full of falcodores. He'll learn to appreciate that having a car that handles well is better than having a car that goes fast in a straight line. Yes, the extra power is nice, but lets face it more power is the last thing a P-plater needs.

Yeah, but not every P-plater is sensible. Anyone remember Captian Douche-pants? PRIME example.

In my opinion, it's better to have a car that can handle more power than to have something that powers over the handling. I've driven a lot of different cars, from an Audi A5 V6TDi with quattro all wheel drive, to a '72 VW Kombi that likes to start leaning over at every mention of a corner, and can safely say that having the handling ability over raw power is much more fun when you're as limited as a p-plater.

Going fast isn't just about straight line speed. Anyone can do that. It's about carrying that speed through the corners.

Correct. On the other hand, though, GPX/GPvRs have some power with good handling.

So if the chassis is a DE2A, does this make it harder to get body/under car parts?
Can you still install the same suspension/brake/interior mods that are available for the DE3A?

OK, VERY rare in Australia and although the engine itself may come from a Lancer, there will be bits that dont and arent shared with your regular FTO. Id be careful with that one and do a bit more research before going down that path. He'd be better off with a GR or a GX in my opinion.
