Engine Making Noise after cam shaft cleaning =(

Post by Vennie »

Hopping someone out there would know what is causing that metal hitting noise. We did open up the engine to check if something is broken or cracked but didn't find anything. Timing and engine sound is good.

If you just cleaned your camshaft then it may be sitting wrong - as in the lobe(s) is/are making too much or too little contact with the valve.
I fix cars.

does it increase with the revs?

Sound like some electric switch or solenoid firing.

Did you have the intake manifold off the engine?
Did you have the rear rocker cover off?
Did you have the spark plugs out?
Are you missing a nut or washer from your intake or anywhere else?
Do you know where I am going with this line of questioning?

To me it sounds like you could have a piece of metal (washer/nut) bouncing around on the top of a piston.
If you dropped something down the intake, it would have landed on top of a vavle. When the engine started it would have found its way into the combustion chamber. Something could also have fallen into an open spark plug hole.
At the start of the video you can hear it bouncing, then it becomes rythmnicly in time with the piston.

I hope I am wrong but it is worth considering.

Is this the same sound you got Alex?

If it was a tappet noise it would sound more like one of these.......

Taz, well maybe .. my mechanic was trying to tune it but still same.

Daniel, could be that but we have no guideline how much or how little =.=||

Shane, yes it does. it's getting too loud so we stop the engine and open it up again to check.

Phil, we did double check all screw and nut too see if anything loose or crack but couldn't find anything wrong. It's not the same sound with the video you posted. We did trace the vibration of the sound and it came from the cover not the body.

I guess I have to buy another cam tray =(

Wasn't serious about tappet noise, thus the troll face.

Did you peoples not read my post
I stated that it sounds as he has dropped a washer or nut into his intake and the noise is a piece of metal on top of a piston destroying his engine.
I only posted up the video so you can see that it is not a tappet noise

Ouch... +1 on the washer

Start looking for a low km engine.

I find the best way is a piece of masking tape over the plenum. Not only does it hold the gasket down so you cant really break it accidentally by ripping it up the threads but also keeping sh*t out (like a washer)
Even then i always check inside anyway with a telescopic magnet - just in case, only takes 1 small washer

This might be a tip for next time ay? ;)

Air gun.

Also, on most facelifts, they didn't use a stud with wash & nut on the end of the intake for that very reason, they changed it to a bolt.

I have a piece of cardboard cut out that goes over the studs to cover it. And am always very careful removing the nut and washer either end.

Bet ya its one of leads not connected into coil or one coil stuffed, try to borrow some, or touch them as running and you will feel pulsing. Dont think washer in engine as would of already done damage as soon as startup happened.....

Not blowing blue smoke through exhaust is it?

PHIL, haha I did listen to you. But we check and there's nothing in the engine block, its sparkling clean =)
vipfto, Which coil you are referring to ? I'm trying to get a cam tray from a friend to test. Hopefully it will solve the problem. No blue smoke =)
